Yonkers Insider: City of Yonkers: ***NEWS RELEASE***: YONKERS MAYOR SPANO EXPANDS CITY’S FOOD SCRAP RECYCLING INITIATIVE TO INCLUDE CURBSIDE COLLECTION.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: YONKERS MAYOR SPANO EXPANDS CITY’S FOOD SCRAP RECYCLING INITIATIVE TO INCLUDE CURBSIDE COLLECTION.

Curbside Pick-Up to Include up to 500 Households at Residential Buildings.

YONKERS, NY – May 31, 2023 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the Yonkers Department of Public Works (DPW) is launching a new Curbside Food Scrap Collection pilot program, expanding its food scrap recycling initiative in partnership with Westchester County’s Department of Environmental Facilities. Two hundred households at 1085 Warburton Avenue are the first participants in the pilot program, which will serve as a model for expanding to other buildings and households.

“Since its launch last spring, we have seen great success with our Food Scrap Collection program, collecting between three to four hundred pounds of food scraps per week,” said Mayor Spano. “Now, by focusing on food scrap recycling at residential buildings, we are supporting participation among residents who may not otherwise be able to participate due to a lack of yard space for backyard composting or transportation to the Recycling Center. With our partnership with the County, our hope is eventually to make curbside food scrap collection available citywide, which will increase our recycling efforts and better protect our environment.”

As part of the curbside collection pilot program, the City of Yonkers provides each household with a food scrap kit, including a countertop pail, a larger storage bin, and a roll of compostable bags. Residents are able to empty their bin as often as necessary into two of the City’s large toters located at the building’s designated food scrap drop-off site.  Yonkers DPW crews pick up the building’s food scraps twice a week on regular refuse collection days. The City then transfers the food scraps to a compost facility in northern Westchester through a partnership with Westchester County. Yonkers DPW will track the amount of food scraps diverted from the waste stream through this pilot program. The City plans to expand the program to up to 500 households during the initial phase, and is also exploring food scrap collection at Yonkers Public Schools as early as next school year.

Last spring, the City of Yonkers launched its citywide food scrap recycling program at the Yonkers Recycling Center (735 Saw Mill River Road), which allows residents to drop off their household food scraps for composting. Home food scrap kits are available for purchase ($20) at the Yonkers Recycling Center. Kits include one 1.9 gallon countertop pail, one six-gallon home storage and transportation bin and a roll of 25 compostable bags. Filled bags can be dropped off at the Yonkers Recycling Center during regular operating hours. Diverting food scraps lowers the City’s solid waste disposal costs, reduces household waste and reduces the amount of waste transferred for incineration at the Charles Point Resource Recovery Facility.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer stated, “This pilot program launch is another step toward our goal in Westchester County of utilizing every means necessary to reduce what we put in the waste stream. With Westchester’s largest City on board under the leadership of Mayor Mike Spano, our food scrap recycling program is well on its way to producing the results we were aiming for when first launched.”

Under the County’s Residential Food Scrap Transportation and Disposal (RFSTAD) program, the County’s Department of Environmental Facilities arranges for the consolidation, transportation, and processing of food scraps collected by municipalities. The County’s participation reduces the cost so that it is the same as-- or less than -- the transportation and disposal cost of garbage, making food scrap recycling feasible for municipalities that otherwise would not be able to offer this service. With the City’s participation, Yonkers is the largest municipality in Westchester’s Residential Food Scrap Transportation and Disposal program.

Residents can visit the Yonkers Recycling Center, at 735 Saw Mill River Road, Mondays - Saturdays, 7:30am-4:15pm. For more information on Yonkers food scrap recycling program, including acceptable food scrap items and how to participate, visit www.yonkersny.gov/foodscraps.

Yonkers Insider: FROM Yonkers City Councilman JOHN RUBBO: Memorial Day.

🇺🇸 Remembering and Honoring the Brave 🇺🇸

On this solemn Memorial Day, we pause to remember and pay tribute to the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation. Today, we honor the heroes who selflessly defended our freedom and upheld the values we hold dear.

Let us reflect on the profound sacrifices made by our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. They answered the call of duty, leaving behind their families, dreams, and aspirations, to protect the ideals that define us as a nation. Their unwavering commitment and valor serve as a timeless reminder of the tremendous cost of liberty.

Amidst the barbecues, parades, and gatherings, let us never forget the true purpose of this day. It is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and unity. It is an opportunity for all Americans, from every background and walk of life, to come together and acknowledge the debt we owe to those who fought for our freedom.

Today, we express our deepest gratitude to the fallen, as well as to their families, whose lives were forever changed. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten, and your loved ones will always be remembered as the true patriots they were.

As we enjoy the blessings of liberty, let us recommit ourselves to preserving and upholding the ideals for which so many gave their lives. Let us stand united, embracing the values of freedom, justice, and equality that our heroes fought to protect.

May this Memorial Day be a time of reflection, appreciation, and renewal. Let us honor the fallen by living lives worthy of their sacrifice, and let us ensure that their legacy shines bright in our nation's heart.

While I am unable to attend the Climate Jobs and Justice Rally here in Westchester County, I continue to support the goals of The Climate and Community Protection Fund legislation. Yonkers Insider: Assemblyman Sayegh Passes Legislation Combating Criminals Who Use Fake & Untraceable Phone Numbers to Force School Lockdowns & To Falsely & Intentionally Harass and Cause Harm.

Using fake and untraceable phone numbers, criminals can make false reports of mass casualty events, guns spotted near schools, and other false reports that trigger school lockdowns and shelter in place alerts. These calls have occurred statewide and right here in Yonkers.

Additionally, using fake phone numbers, criminals can harass public officials, or neighbors.

It is nearly impossible for police to catch these perpetrators, so this week I passed in the Assembly, Bill A0061 which requires the companies providing fake phone numbers, to keep records on who obtained them.

Assemblyman Sayegh explained the purpose of the legislation to his Assembly colleagues. The vote to approve the measure was unanimous.

Friends,

I voted in the Assembly to make significant changes in our State's Bail Laws to make sure our criminal court judges can set appropriate bail

for serious crimes and for low level repeat offences such as shoplifting.

I am co sponsoring legislation to make assaulting a retail store owner or workers a serious offense and have provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in State Grants to the Yonkers Police Department while funding special anti-violence programs in our neighborhoods.

The recently passed State Budget also increases funding to help those suffering with mental illness.

Almost all New Yorkers – 92% – believe crime is “very serious” or “somewhat serious” of a problem statewide, while 65% say the same about their own community (The Siena Poll).

Crime was the number one question in my recent Constituent Survey.

Question 1 asked if residents felt safe walking around their Yonkers neighborhood?

60% said yes, 35% said not always and 5% said they do not. I thank everyone who took the time to respond to the survey.

I will continue to advocate for funding and programs to do what is needed to make our streets and communities safe.

Yonkers Insider: Statement from New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District.

Memorial Day is more than backyard barbecues and the unofficial start of summer. The holiday is an important opportunity to honor the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who died while serving their country in Uniform.

Memorial Day usually means a three-day weekend for many with backyard barbecues and the unofficial start of summer, but there is more to it than that. The American holiday hasn't always gone by Memorial Day, but has always been a holiday and an opportunity to honor military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. military. Among the many ceremonies planned for Monday, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1666 in Yonkers will hold a ceremony at 1 p.m. at 574 Yonkers Avenue.

Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano: Memorial Day -- Remembering Our Fallen Heroes.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On this Memorial Day, the grass is greener, the flowers are in bloom and our City looks beautiful this time of year.

Today is a day to reflect on the wonder that is America, all it represents, and remember those who gave their lives in defense of it.

We also take time to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces currently serving at home and overseas.

I am proud the City of Yonkers takes great pride in paying tribute to its Veterans and recognizing them for their courage and commitment to our nation.

I welcome all residents to attend the many events and ceremonies being held around Yonkers in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This morning at 9:00 a.m., the City of Yonkers will hold a special Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Plaza on South Broadway at City Hall.

As you enjoy this day, may you also reflect on what it truly means to live with freedom in the United States of America.

Matters of Faith: That God May Be Glorified - Article.

That God May Be Glorified

By Reverend J. Loren Russell

Colossians 3:12-17 (NKJV)

“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Whenever I end a public prayer, I routinely close by saying, “I pray that the Lord will be glorified, people edified, Satan and all his demons terrified, and our faith justified.” In everything that we do, God should be glorified. It doesn’t matter if we are serving on a ministry at our respective place of worship, or standing online at a grocery store, “whatever we do in word or deed, do all in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Just in case you didn’t know, the “Him” Paul is referring to in this epistle is Jesus).

The truth is that it is not easy to put God first in all things. The temporal things in life, the things that please the flesh, are at war against the spirit. Paul understood the struggle the Colossians’ faced, even though they were faithful followers. So, he encourages his readers in verses 1-11 to set their minds on things that transcend the earth’s temporal enticements, those things that governed their lives before coming into relationship with Christ. He does not beat around the bush. He shares that it is their normal practice to engage in fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, covetousness, and idolatry. These, Paul says, was fostering anger, wrath, malice, blaspheme, filthy language out of their mouths, and lying. If Paul concluded his communication here, the Colossian church would have been in dire straits. But Paul provides words of encouragement.  He says all of those attributes are a part of the old man/woman they once were. But now, they have been renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him [God]who created him [Jesus]. Paul is saying that whatever they did, no matter what it was, if done in the name of Jesus, glorified God.

Paul wrote a similar message to the Corinthian church and told them that they were bought with a price and should glorify God in their body and their spirit because they both belong to Him (1 Cor. 6:20). Whether works of the flesh or by the spirit, whatever is done should glorify God.

The book of Colossians may have been written to those in Colossi, but it is just as applicable to believers today. We are to give thanks to God the Father through His son Jesus Christ, that God may be glorified.

Be Blessed!
