Westchester Insider: Election 2021 Desk News: Statement from James Nolan Republican for Westchester County Legislator 15th District: Elections 2021.

As I have walked District 15 meeting residents in different areas many of them have brought to my attention the alarming spike in blackouts that have been occurring. Residents have been informing me that they are happening more then before and that also they have noticed a spike in their Con Edison bill. I tell the residents that since the one party rule Westchester County Legislator Board and Environmental Chair (my opponent) advocated for the closure of Indian Point that Yonkers has lost 2 gigawatts of power, NYC lost 25% of their power source. Since the closure they haven’t replaced the energy sources which puts a strain on what we do have in place. Yonkers losing 2 kilowatts of power is dangerous especially during the hot days of the summer or the cold days in the winter causing overuse. Con Edison also is upping the charges for all customers to take advantage of the situation. The current Westchester County one party rule Legislator Board isn’t telling their residents how they want to allow Con Edison to build dangerous hub stations throughout Yonkers which we can not afford. Residents of Yonkers should not have live with hub stations built in their neighborhoods or stuck with the bill. Indian point produced natural energy which we have now lost along with the closure many union members were also laid off during the pandemic (my opponent is the co-chair of the county labor board). The Westchester County Legislator Board one party rule only cares about their agenda, your votes, and taking what’s in your pockets NOT the people. At this rate right now property taxes will go up next year, they didn’t this year, but last year they approved property taxes to go up 6%. Municipalities around the Indian Point facility have also lost funding from the closure such as the fire department, schools, and programs. Dangerous hub stations shouldn’t be built, jobs shouldn’t have been lost, and the cost of living shouldn’t increase the misspending must end. When elected Westchester County Legislator for District 15 I will advocate to make sure that Westchester County is safer, cleaner, and more affordable once again! #nolan4countylegislatordiatrict15 #imrollingwithnolan #westchesterdistrict15 #takebackthe15th #westchester #LeadRight #conservative #bronxville #Republican #yonkers

Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers City Council Majority Leader Corazon Pineda Issac 2nd District.

As the month of July comes to a close, I would like to announce that my office and I are planning a trip to Rye Playland for children in our community in the month of August. The details have not yet been flushed out, but I wanted to make you are all aware, so that you pay attention to our posts, and reserve your spots quickly. This event has been a ton of fun in years past, and since the pandemic made it impossible last year, we hope to make it available again!

Best regards,

Greenburgh Insider: Expect traffic delays at 4 corners, Hartsdale during August.

Construction of a new sidewalk on Central Ave at the vicinity of the 4 corners in Hartsdale will result in traffic delays during the month of August from 7 AM to 3 PM.

Please note that there will be heavy traffic delays westbound on West Hartsdale Avenue towards Central Avenue and the Hartsdale Train station during the month of August on weekdays from 7:00am - 3:00pm to accommodate construction of the Central Avenue Sidewalk in the vicinity of Four Corners. Allowing work during this time period is planned to facilitate completion of the sidewalk in this area, in advance of the fall school year.  Lane closures/modifications in the vicinity will result in traffic inconveniences.

The sidewalk being built is from Marion Ave to W Hartsdale Ave. Much of the work has been done in recent months. The work being done in August is the final aspect of the project.  We believe that the sidewalk will enhance pedestrian safety when completed.

Westchester Insider: Westchester County: MOSQUITOES WITH WEST NILE VIRUS FOUND IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY.

MOSQUITOES WITH WEST NILE VIRUS FOUND IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY.

County Health Department Reminds Residents to Remove Standing Water and Use Repellents.

(White Plains, NY) – The Westchester County Health Department announced that this season’s first two batches of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus in Westchester were detected in Mount Vernon. The areas surrounding the positive mosquito batches were inspected today by the Health Department, and nearby catch basins that held standing water were treated to protect against further mosquito breeding nearby.

To date, these are the first positives out of 105 batches of mosquitos collected from 11 locations throughout Westchester that were tested for West Nile Virus by the New York State Department of Health. New York City announced on July 22 that it had detected West Nile Virus in mosquitos in all five boroughs. Last year, five Westchester batches of mosquitoes had West Nile Virus out of 190 submitted for testing, with the virus first detected in mosquitoes collected on July 23.

Sherlita Amler, MD, Commissioner of Health, said:  “With so many of us spending more time outdoors, protect yourself and your family by using repellents. Apply sunscreen first, and repellent second.”

The Health Department reminds residents about mosquito safety through news releases, social media and our website, where a report on mosquito control and surveillance can be found on the West Nile Virus page. Throughout the season, the Department also traps and tests mosquitoes to track the presence of mosquito-borne viruses.

So far this year, there have been no reported cases of West Nile Virus in Westchester. Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and joint pain, but can be more serious for people 60 and older, and those with underlying medical conditions.

For more ideas on how to reduce the mosquito population near your home, go to https://health.westchestergov.com/west-nile-virus and follow these tips:

  • Avoid the outdoors in the late afternoon and early evening when mosquitoes are active and feeding, or use insect repellents then and follow the label instructions.
  • Adults can use insect repellents with up to 30 percent DEET on infants over two months of age by applying the product to their own hands and then rubbing it onto their children, avoiding their hands, eyes and mouth. Products containing DEET are not recommended for use on children under two months of age.
  • Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and socks when outdoors, especially in areas where mosquitoes are active and feeding.
  • Check around your property for anything that can hold water, and pour it out or put it away.
  • Check and remove standing water from children’s toys and play houses left outside.
  • Remove discarded tires.
  • Drill holes in the bottoms of all recycling containers that are left outdoors.
  • Turn over plastic wading pools, buckets and wheelbarrows when not in use.
  • Change the water in birdbaths at least twice weekly.
  • Keep storm drains and gutters clear of leaves and debris.
  • Continue to chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor spas and hot tubs until properly winterized or drained for the season. Also, if not chlorinated, drain any water that collects on their covers.

Residents who notice large areas of standing water on public property should report them to the Westchester County Department of Health at (914) 813-5000.

New York City Insider: Media Statement: New York State Must Extend The Eviction Moratorium.

THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

OFFICE OF COUNCIL MEMBER
YDANIS RODRIGUEZ

Friday, July 30th, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

**MEDIA STATEMENT**

New York State Must Extend The Eviction Moratorium

"The devastating impact that the end of the eviction moratorium will have on working and low-income communities is unprecedented. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of families will be left homeless. The most impacted communities will be those of low to moderate income, mainly the middle class, which have been historically left behind, precisely those most affected by the COVID virus.

The federal moratorium expires tomorrow, Saturday, July 31, 2021. The New York State moratorium expires in one month, on August 31, 2021. Although there may not be time to extend the federal moratorium before Congress goes into recess today, there is time for the New York State legislature to act as soon as possible and adopt an extension of the eviction moratorium, until at least October 31, 2021. To act contrary would be a serious blow to New Yorkers' hopes, that a Democratic majority in Albany would bring justice to the most disadvantaged communities in New York City and throughout this state. It's all hands on deck. We must extend the eviction moratorium."

Westchester Insider: WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER STATEMENT ON VACCINATION STATUS OF COUNTY WORKFORCE AND COUNTY MASK POLICY.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER STATEMENT ON VACCINATION STATUS OF COUNTY WORKFORCE AND COUNTY MASK POLICY.

(White Plains, NY) – “Since taking office, my top priority is, and always has been, the health and safety of the County workforce and the people that we serve.  After much consideration and consultation with County workers, department heads and union leaders, I am launching a robust “Just the Facts: We’re Vaxxed” campaign to encourage the entire County workforce to be vaccinated by Labor Day 2021.

“The first step will be a survey to access the vaccination status of all employees. Those departments that are fully vaccinated will be highlighted across the County.  In addition, those County employees who are fully vaccinated will receive four free passes to Playland for the 2021 season. To affirm our stance that County employees need to be vaccinated, County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler and I will be visiting all County Departments to discuss the vaccine.

“To accommodate those who want to be vaccinated, the County will offer extended vaccination locations and hours along with the already existing locations at the Westchester County Center, and our two Health Department clinics in White Plains and Yonkers.

“Additionally, the County will re-establish a mandatory mask mandate for most County facilities.  At all Westchester County office buildings, unvaccinated employees and those who visit will be required to be masked at all times. Those who are vaccinated, will need to be masked in all common areas.  All County buildings will remain open to the public.

“At all County beaches and County pools, masks will be required when patrons go to concession stands, locker rooms, bathrooms and other locations regardless of vaccination status. Playland mask policies are still being evaluated.

“We are exploring a more robust County workforce surveillance COVID testing program.  This is an open and fluid conversation that could change depending on COVID statistics and other important factors.

“We must work together, we must stay strong, and we must continue to move forward.”

Westchester Insider: Westchester County Hosts the 149th Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s Annual Convention, August 5-7.

Westchester County Hosts the 149th Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s Annual Convention, August 5-7.

(White Plains, NY) – Westchester County Executive George Latimer will welcome the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) to the Sonesta White Plains Downtown for its 149th Annual Convention this summer, August 5-7.

With hundreds of volunteer firefighters, EMS personnel and their families from around the state expected to attend, the convention is among the first major business events in Westchester County since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global meetings industry in 2020. It is estimated to generate $800,000 in economic activity for the region.

FASNY has also committed to bring its convention back to Westchester for its 150th Anniversary. The largest gathering of volunteer firefighters in the state, the annual event brings together members from every corner of New York with renowned speakers from across the country for three days of training, presentations and information sharing.

Latimer said: “We are thrilled to welcome the FASNY to Westchester County next month. It is both a great honor and a vote of confidence in the readiness of Westchester’s hospitality businesses to provide a productive, enriching and entertaining environment for the brave firefighters, EMTs and their families who have given so much to our community and to communities throughout the state. We are particularly mindful of those sacrifices in the wake of the darkest days of the pandemic and as the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches.”

Westchester County Tourism & Film Director Natasha Caputo said: “Westchester salutes the members of FASNY and invites attendees to enjoy the best of our destination. This convention will bring a great buzz and economic boost to our tourism partners across the County.”

FASNY President John P. Farrell said: “The annual FASNY convention is one of the most critical events of the year for the volunteer fire service and EMS providers around the state. We are happy to be back in Westchester County and have the opportunity to train, exchange ideas, gain knowledge about important safety approaches, and to overall improve the fire service so we can protect the residents of New York.”
