FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Senator Shelley Mayer Donates Toiletries to My Sisters’ Place.

(White Plains, NY) - Following a successful month-long toiletry drive throughout her district, State Senator Shelley Mayer donated four moving boxes full of toiletries to My Sisters’ Place of Westchester. My Sisters’ Place is an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and human trafficking through community education, advocacy, and comprehensive services. My Sisters’ Place serves over 1,000 families in Westchester County.

Individuals donated toiletries at sites set up at the Yonkers Will Library, North Castle Town Hall, and Port Chester Village Hall. Donors provided personal hygiene products such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, body wash, moisturizer, and deodorant.

Senator Shelley Mayer said, “I am grateful to have many generous constituents who were able to donate supplies to those who benefit from My Sisters’ Place’s services. My Sisters’ Place does indispensable and life changing work for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, and I am thankful to all those who contributed. Thank you to the Will Library, North Castle Town Hall, and Port Chester Village Hall for allowing us to use your space as a donation location. Lastly, thank you to My Sisters' Place and Karen Cheeks-Lomax, CEO, for your indispensable work."

She stands up for those impacted by domestic violence and human trafficking, looking at the big picture and legislating change. She joins us right in our own backyards, organizing collection drives that provide much needed items for the survivors we serve. We can’t do this work without her support. Thank you, Senator Mayer.”

Senator Mayer was able to bring four boxes worth of supplies to My Sisters’ Place as a result of the toiletry drive. The supplies will be distributed to those aided by the organization.

Yonkers Insider: 2023 Campaign Trail: Statement from Shanae Williams Democrat for Westchester County Legislator in the 16th District.

Words cannot fully express the gratitude and joy I am feeling today but I will do my best. We won 61% of the votes in the primary which means we are one step closer to our goal of bringing new leadership to the County Board of Legislators, District 16.

Thank you to every voter that participated in the primary elections – whether you voted early, by absentee or on primary day, your vote mattered. A very special thank you to the 1,608 residents who believed in me and casted their vote for me to be their County Legislator. Together we will make Yonkers and Westchester County government work for everyone.

Thank you to my campaign team that worked tirelessly to make sure we were able to reach the voters and get the vote out. Our messaging through mail and texts by Precision Strategies Group, our campaign video by S.I.C. Film School, our social media by Omar Herrera made an impact that led to our success.

To all our volunteers, district leaders, business owners, friends and family who gave their time to help us in this primary, thank you very much. Thank you to everyone who hosted a fundraiser for me – Vincent Spano, Nick Spano, Huessin Rababa, the Nofal Family, and Hezues R. – and every person who contributed. Your confidence in me made all the difference.

Thank you to the Yonkers Democratic City Committee, Yonkers Firefighters Local 628, Teamsters Local 456, District Council 9, Eleanor’s Legacy, Muslim Democratic Caucus, Indian American Democratic Committee of Westchester for your endorsements. We are victorious because of you all.

I am humbled and grateful that my dream to continue to serve the people lives on, and I give all the glory to God. May God bless the City of Yonkers, the County of Westchester and the State of New York!

Sincerely yours,

Shanae

YONKERS, NY

Air Quality Alert Message
Relayed by National Weather Service New York NY
1032 AM EDT Wed Jun 28 2023
...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT TONIGHT...

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has
issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties:

New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk,
Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam.

Until midnight EDT tonight.

Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than
an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine
Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy
way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The
higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern.

When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of
Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous
outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health
effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of
elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with
preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.
Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal
physician.

DREAMS COME TRUE IN YONKERS: After losing her mother, and a mid-year move from Chicago, Student is embraced by a Yonkers school community and is now moving on to college

MAKING HISTORY: Jaclyn Allyn is member of 1st graduating class at the Charter School Of Educational Excellence in Yonkers YONKERS: Forced to abruptly relocate from Chicago to The City of Yonkers, four years ago when her mother died of breast cancer, Jaclyn Allyn didn't know where she and her two siblings would continue their studies. "It was a very complicated situation. My dad was already in New York because we were planning to move here after I graduated middle school," said Allyn, 18, who on June 23 graduated from the Charter School Of Educational Excellence (CSEE). "My mom died halfway through the year, and it was a situation in which no one was taking care of the kids, so we had to move to Yonkers with my dad so we wouldn't get put into the foster system." Allyn was accepted by the CSEE as a ninth grader, and she is now a member of the Class of 2023, the school's first graduating senior class with a graduation rate of 98 percent. She gives the school staff credit for her success. "Their support for me and my family after my mother's death gave me strength and the confidence that I could go on. And I can't say enough about them," she said. "And I have my Dad. We got closer, so he's one of my best friends now. I can go to him for anything. And I also have a couple of staff members at the school who I know I can trust, who I can confide in as part of my support system," said Allyn, who will enter Clark Atlanta University in September. Members of the Class of 2023 accepted offers from some of the country's most prestigious universities, including Cornell University, New York University, Boston University, and other competitive schools. Most of the school's graduating seniors have already taken college-credit courses, and they will not need remedial courses in college. "Our school was founded with the belief that all children can excel academically if they are given rigorous course work," said high school principal Dwain Palmer. "The higher education destinations for our first graduating class prove that children from all backgrounds can gain entry to the most competitive schools if they are given the chance to succeed. Jaclyn is a great example of the crucially important role a school can play in shaping a student's future." The Class of 2023's June graduation rate of 98 percent is significantly higher than the New York state average, which was 87 percent in 2022. Students earned more than $7.5 million in scholarships. The first graduating senior class is the CSEE's latest accomplishment. Earlier this year the K-12 school cut a ribbon on professional-grade performance stage to expose students to the world of performance and media production. In 2021 the school opened its $27 million high school building at 220 Warburton Ave. Many members of the Class of 2023 chose to stay local and attend colleges close to home, including Mercy College, Iona University and Westchester Community College. The City University of New York and the State University of New York systems were also popular. Allyn chose Clark Atlanta University because she wanted to attend a historically Black institution and Atlanta was her target city. She said her four years at the CSEE prepared her well for college and made her resilient. "I'm always ready for anything that's thrown at me because I've had a lot of obstacles in my life," said Allyn. "I know that there are going to be a lot of hard things coming towards me and I don't know what they are yet, but I'm very excited to be moving forward and I know my experiences at CSEE have given me the chance to move to the next level." https://www.facebook.com/groups/YonkersNewswire/posts/3564879597102926/

Yonkers Insider: Press Release: Assemblyman Nader Sayegh: Summer Reading Challenge helps show kids that we’re ‘All Together Now.

YONKERS, NY- Assemblyman Nader Sayegh is inviting Yonkers kids to participate in the New York State Assembly’s annual Summer Reading Challenge, held in partnership with New York State Libraries. The theme for this year’s challenge is “All Together Now” to celebrate kindness and friendship. Those who complete the challenge will be awarded a state Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate to celebrate their achievement.

“Reading is vital for young New Yorkers’ intellectual development and offers them opportunities to become immersed in thrilling narratives, explore different worlds, discover new interests or learn new skills,” said Assemblyman Nader Sayegh. “To combat the loss of learning commonly experienced by students over summer break, known as the ‘summer slide,’ it’s vital for children to continue reading over the summer months. The Summer Reading Challenge is the perfect opportunity to inspire kids to regularly read throughout the summer and foster a love of learning within the next generation of leaders.”

The Summer Reading Challenge asks children to read for at least 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during the months of July and August. Children can read by themselves or with a partner or caretaker and then mark the days on the calendar provided. After marking 40 days or more, they can submit the calendar to Assemblyman Nader Sayegh’s office to receive their certificate in the mail. New Yorkers are also encouraged to visit their local library for summer reading recommendations and a host of other programs and services. To make sure no child goes hungry this summer, the Yonkers Public Library also offers free takeaway meals at their Riverfront Library Branch every weekday beginning on June 27th, 2023 from 9:30 to 12:30 PM.

You can find the library branch near you at the New York State Libraries website, nysl.nysed.gov. For more information about the Summer Reading Challenge, please visit summerreadingnys.org, email sayeghn@nyassembly.gov or call Assemblyman Sayegh’s office at 914-779-8805.
