Yonkers Insider: City of Yonkers: Community Events/News: Arbor Day Tree Planting.

It was a great pleasure to visit Cochran Park today! I was very inspired by the students of the Andalusia School, who through their speeches and by planting two trees, expressed the importance of trees and protecting our environment.

Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

Dear Friend,

I have some exciting news to share!

If you see a police-marked Tesla in your neighborhood, know that it's a promise kept to strengthen our commitment to reducing vehicle emissions and fossil fuel dependence which is good for the environment and our bottom line.

The purchase of the fully electric vehicle comes soon after I signed an Executive Order which made alternative fuel vehicles the standard for light-duty city vehicles, which will further reduce fuel use.

The Yonkers Police’s Tesla Model 3 will be assigned to the Department's Traffic Unit, used for speed details, vehicle and traffic enforcement, and various other functions within the unit.

This is just yet another step in the right direction to provide for a cleaner, greener Yonkers.

Yonkers Insider: Statement from Congressman Jamaal Bowman Regarding 6-Year-Old Boy Shot in Yonkers.

Statement from Congressman Jamaal Bowman Regarding 6-Year-Old Boy Shot in Yonkers.

For Immediate Release: April 30, 2021

YONKERS, N.Y. — Rep. Jamaal Bowman released the following statement Friday in response to the shooting last night of a 6-year-old boy in Yonkers:

“This morning, I was alarmed to hear of the news that a 6-year-old boy was shot in Yonkers, and disturbed to learn that it was the result of teenagers exchanging gunfire. First and foremost, we are sending love, strength, and healing to this young boy and his family. Children should be able to live happily and in peace, free of violence.

“My number one priority is the safety of our communities, and particularly the safety of our children. We are in touch with local authorities, who have taken the shooters into custody. We are checking in with local authorities to ensure the family is supported through this process. This violence is too common of an occurrence.

“In addition, we will continue to work to break the cycles that have trapped too many of our youth on the wrong path. The violence inflicted on this child was the extension of a cycle of violence that has, unfortunately, carried on for far too long. And that cycle is the result of policy choices that have neglected Black and brown communities. We need to invest in your youth and provide them with ample resources to break that cycle and realize their potential. In addition, we need to do more to take guns out of the hands of our youth by instituting federal gun laws that make it harder to bring unregistered and illegal guns from outside of our state into our communities. Most importantly, we need to continue to move resources into these communities and listen to them about their needs. Sending love and healing to our Yonkers community.”

Westchester Insider: Westchester County District Attorney's Office: DA ROCAH CALLS ON U.S. DEPT. OF JUSTICE TO INVESTIGATE MOUNT VERNON POLICE DEPARTMENT.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY

MIRIAM E. ROCAH

***NEWS RELEASE***

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 30, 2021

DA ROCAH CALLS ON U.S. DEPT. OF JUSTICE TO INVESTIGATE MOUNT VERNON POLICE DEPARTMENT.

Westchester District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah today publicly called on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) for pervasive and persistent alleged civil rights violations including unlawful strip searches, excessive use of force, and other misconduct.

“The Westchester District Attorney’s Office is engaged in ongoing criminal investigations of certain individual MVPD police officers,” DA Rocah said. “In the course of those investigations, based largely on publicly available information, we have found disturbing allegations of patterns of inappropriate and potentially unlawful conduct by several former and current members of the MVPD. We have provided information that we gathered in this respect to DOJ.”

“While our criminal investigations of individual officers continue, we are requesting that DOJ scrutinize the MVPD’s operations, training and policies to determine whether the MVPD is systematically violating peoples’ civil rights and, if so, to take action to address these matters,” DA Rocah added.

“Since taking office in January, 2020 my mandate has been transformation and accountability across city agencies including the police department. We are working hard to dismantle systemic issues and reform policing to ensure that our community is a safe place for all,” said Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard. “Our administration referred multiple cases to the District Attorney for review and welcome DA Rocah’s request that DOJ add its resources to identify and address these issues for the benefit of our community.”

DA Rocah said that a DOJ investigation would focus on broader issues of civil rather than criminal law, which do not typically fall under the purview of the DA’s Office. She emphasized that the DA’s Office continues to work with the MVPD to investigate and prosecute crimes in Mount Vernon, and said this ongoing collaboration would continue without disruption during a DOJ investigation.

In March, DA Rocah wrote to MVPD Commissioner of Public Safety Glenn Scott regarding what appeared to be a routine practice of strip searches and body cavity searches of suspects. “My concern arises not from a single, isolated complaint, but from a number of them from 2012-20, making similar allegations of certain police officers illegally or inappropriately conducting these highly invasive searches without the high legal and/or factual predicate thresholds having been satisfied,” DA Rocah stated in the letter.

Since taking office in January, DA Rocah has greatly increased the focus of the Westchester DA’s Office on all forms of public corruption, including police misconduct. “All Westchester residents need to have confidence that they will be treated fairly and equitably. Public trust in our criminal justice system is critical to public safety and we must strengthen that confidence through any tools available to us.”

Greenburgh Insider: Percentages -those over 18 who have been vaccinated by neighborhoods.

#VAXUPWESTCHESTER AIMS TO BOOST VACCINATION RATES IN REGION - County data reveals wide gaps in vaccination coverage for eligible adults.

Ardsley (63.5), Dobbs Ferry (51.2), Elmsford (35), Hartsdale (51.6), Hastings (57.9), Irvington (62), Tarrytown (44.6), and White Plains zips 10603 39.6) and 10607 (46.2). The Scarsdale 10583 zip code has a 59.9 participation rate--those 18 or over as of April 30th

GREENBURGH, NY__ Recently released Westchester county data on vaccination rates for eligible adults (age 18+) shows wide disparities between often adjacent communities - a gap the Town of Greenburgh’s new initiative, #VaxUpWestchester, hopes to bridge.

“The county’s data really highlights what communities we need to focus on and that there’s so much more work to do,” says #VaxUpWestchester’s Co-Chair Kenny Herzog.  Link to the site can be found here: VaxUpWestchester was started by Greenburgh as a follow up to our successful Covid Angels initiative.

https://wcgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/0a451c6b69dc460b9f869728682383d9

Only 35 percent of Elmsford residents over the age of 18 have been vaccinated, versus 51.6 percent in nearby Hartsdale.

Here in Greenburgh, the county lists vaccination percentages for Ardsley (63.5), Dobbs Ferry (51.2), Elmsford (35), Hartsdale (51.6), Hastings (57.9), Irvington (62), Tarrytown (44.6), and White Plains zips 10603 39.6) and 10607 (46.2). The Scarsdale 10583 zip code has a 59.9 participation rate.

The #VaxUpWestchester campaign, gaining momentum after an organizing meeting Monday night with about 45 volunteers via Zoom, plans to tackle the more invisible issues of vaccine hesitancy or lack of access in creative and multi-faceted ways. As Greenburgh did with the Covid Angels appointment-making mission, which will continue for anyone who needs help connecting with a nearby vaccination location, “we are assembling a small army of talented, caring individuals who want to keep our communities safe, and that includes everyone in them,” says group co-chair and Assistant to the Supervisor, Krista Madsen.

#VaxUpWestchester will target communities in the Greater Greenburgh/Lower Westchester area with coordinated outreach of bilingual flyers, vaccination assistance at key sites, social media saturation, and youth employed by the Theodore D. Young Community Center to conduct citizen surveys exploring local hesitancy via grant funding from UJA-Federation of New York and the Westchester Community Foundation - A Division of the New York Community Trust.

“We want to think out of the box to get doses into the arms of every citizen who may lack access or good information. Your ideas and your time and talents are welcome in this grassroots effort,” says Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. “I’m proud of what our many dedicated volunteers have done so far in this fight against Covid-19; we’re not done yet!”  Feiner said that the county site is fantastic  and will motivate us to work harder to encourage people in areas that aren't taking the vaccine to get vaccinated.

Westchester Insider: IN FIRST JURY TRIAL SINCE LAST FALL, MOUNT VERNON MAN GUILTY IN STABBING MURDER.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY

MIRIAM E. ROCAH

***NEWS RELEASE***

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 29, 2021

JURY FINDS MOUNT VERNON MAN GUILTY IN STABBING MURDER.

White Plains, N.Y. – A Mount Vernon man was convicted of murder on April 21 in the first jury trial to take place in Westchester County Court since last fall, when jury trials were suspended for a second time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Savion Kirton, 27, was convicted of Murder in the Second Degree, for the June, 2019 stabbing of Jermial Rose in the neck, resulting in his death. The jury deliberated for 90 minutes before rendering a verdict.

“This was a brutal and senseless crime,” said Westchester District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah. “Thanks to the diligent work of our prosecutorial team, Savion Kirton has been held accountable for his actions, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones.”

A short time before the murder, Kirton’s girlfriend was in a local store in Mount Vernon when Rose brushed up against her. She returned to her apartment and told Kirton what happened. Kirton, armed with a folding knife, immediately went to the store and confronted Rose on the sidewalk outside the establishment.

Security camera video captured Kirton at the scene, where he stabbed Rose in the left side of the neck with enough force that the knife crossed his throat and severed his right carotid artery. The knife, with Rose’s DNA present, was later located in Kirton’s girlfriend’s apartment.

Kirton faces a minimum sentence of 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on May 24.

The case was before Judge George Fufidio.

Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Strongin, Deputy Bureau Chief of the Major Case Bureau, prosecuted the case.

New York State Insider: Statement from New York Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar on Sen. Scott’s GOP Response.

For Immediate Release: April 29, 2021

Statement from New York Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar on Sen. Scott’s GOP Response.

Brooklyn, NY -- “President Biden’s address Wednesday night made it clear that America can’t afford the Democratic Party. His proposals, while nice sounding to some, would constitute an assault on our younger generations which have to bear the brunt of our already unmanageable debt. It’s easy to propose new spending; it’s quite another thing to govern responsibly.

“Senator Tim Scott, in his GOP response, described the America we all embrace; an America that fosters the American Dream knowing that America’s vision from its inception has always relied on a responsible approach to governance.  He spoke to the common sense in each of us and it was a breath of fresh air.”
