Letter from Ruth Walter, Democrat running for Westchester County Legislator in the 15th District.

To my friends and constituents:
I come from a large family. We knew what it was like to budget and to put education and housing at the top of the list. I am proud to have raised my children in a great community, and to have spent 12+ years cultivating connections with both the business community and public officials that keep our community running. As a local businessperson, I prioritize customers and high quality products. My local government has supported our efforts and makes it a great partnership. I want to take this cooperation to the County Level.
Let's keep Westchester moving by continuing to support the high-quality schools, parks and dedicated police and fire departments that keep Westchester working. Our educated workforce brings businesses to Westchester, helps these businesses grow, and ultimately keeps them here. I want to be a representative that helps these businesses grow and amplifies the voices of my constituents in their local government. This campaign is one shaped by your ideas and driven by your hopes for a better county. Thank you.
Yours truly,

Ruth Walter

Democrat running for Westchester County Legislator, 15th District.

Attorney General James Statement on Census Proceeding without Citizenship Question.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 11, 2019

NEW YORK - New York Attorney General Letitia James today released the following statement following President Trump’s announcement that he will not add a citizenship question to the 2020 decennial census:

“Reason has finally prevailed, and President Trump will no longer pursue a citizenship question on the 2020 decennial census. After more than 800 days of attempting to break with its own past practice, the federal government will proceed in the manner as their own Census Bureau had recommended from the beginning.

“Our democracy depends on the census — from allocating federal resources to determining Congressional lines — which is why it is so critically important to ensure the most accurate count of the population.

“We hope that this action will at long last allow us to put this national nightmare behind us, and give us the opportunity to fully focus on education and outreach so that we can ensure that all people are counted.”

RELEASE: SENATOR MAYER ANNOUNCES $24,000 AWARD FOR THE PACE WOMEN’S JUSTICE CENTER.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, July 22, 2019

SENATOR MAYER ANNOUNCES $24,000 AWARD FOR THE PACE WOMEN’S JUSTICE CENTER TO SUPPORT LEGAL SERVICES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS.

State Senator Shelley Mayer; Executive Director of the Pace Women's Justice Center Cindy Kanusher; and Symra Brandon, a representative from the office of Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

White Plains, NY -- On Monday, July 22nd, State Senator Shelley Mayer and Cindy Kanusher, Executive Director of the Pace Women's Justice Center (PWJC) announced a $24,000 grant for the non-profit that provides free legal services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse.

The funding will support a part-time attorney to provide direct, civil legal services for victims of domestic violence in PWJC’s Family Law Unit. As part of this Unit, the part time attorney will represent clients on a range of legal issues including protection orders, custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and contested matrimonial cases.

State Senator Shelley Mayer, 37th District, said, “As an advocate for domestic violence survivors throughout my career, I am pleased that today I have the privilege of announcing a $24,000 grant for the Pace Women’s Justice Center. This grant, obtained through the leadership of Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, will support the hiring of a part-time attorney to provide services for additional victims and survivors of domestic violence. I commend the critical work of the Pace Women’s Justice Center, Executive Director Cindy Kanusher, and their staff and volunteers, for all that they do to support the legal needs of victims and survivors through vulnerable and difficult situations.”

Cindy Kanusher, Executive Director of the Pace Women’s Justice Center, said, “The Pace Women’s Justice Center is so very grateful to Senator Shelley Mayer for her longtime support for our work providing free legal services to over 3500 victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse annually. This new grant will help support our Family Law Unit, which represents clients so they can stay safe in their homes, maintain custody of their children, and gain control over their finances. This funding from Senator Mayer sends the important message that we support survivors, and we will work together towards ending domestic violence."

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, “The Pace Women’s Justice Center (PWJC) provides invaluable services for the victims of domestic violence who are often dealing with both physical and emotional trauma and have nowhere else to turn. The funds secured for the PWJC will help the center continue its important service to Westchester and Putnam Counties. I applaud Senator Shelley Mayer for her staunch advocacy in support of the PWJC and I was proud that the Senate Democratic Majority took historic action to combat domestic violence and protect the survivors of this heinous crime. We will continue to support important organizations like the Pace Women’s Justice Center and stand up for women’s rights and protections.”

Senator Mayer continued, “During the 2019 Legislative Session, under the leadership of Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, I was glad to vote for bills that increase the statute of limitations for survivors of domestic violence to bring a civil suit; ensure victims can take time off from work to obtain services, counseling or attend court proceedings; and provide the necessary safety survivors need by sealing certain public records. These bills passed both the Senate and the Assembly, and I urge the Governor to sign them into law.”

The PWJC provides free legal services to more than 3,500 victims and survivors of domestic violence in Westchester and Putnam Counties annually, helping clients navigate the legal system during a frightening and potentially dangerous time in their lives.

Press Release from New York State Attorney General James.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 8, 2019

Attorney General James and Comptroller DiNapoli Announce Guilty Plea of Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas.

Thomas Admitted to Stealing Campaign Funds, Falsely Filing a Disclosure Report with the State Board of Elections.

Thomas Must Resign Effective September 30, 2019.

WESTCHESTER – Attorney General Letitia James and Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced the guilty plea of Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas for stealing campaign funds and lying about those funds on a disclosure to the State Board of Elections.

Thomas was sentenced to pay a $13,000 fine in addition to a one-year conditional discharge during which time Thomas may not seek or accept any elected or appointed public office or seek or accept any position as a public servant. Thomas will also resign and leave office effective September 30, 2019.

“By using campaign funds to line his own pockets, Thomas broke the law, and violated public trust,” said Attorney General Letitia James. "New Yorkers put their faith in our public servants, and Thomas’ gross violation of that faith constitutes the utmost disloyalty to those he was sworn to serve. My office will continue to root out public corruption, uphold the integrity of public office, and bring bad actors to justice at every level of government throughout New York.”

"Mayor Thomas admitted to knowingly misusing campaign donations to fund his lifestyle instead of funding his campaign," said State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. "Thanks to my partnership with Attorney General Letitia James, his scheme was exposed and he has now admitted his guilt.  I will continue to work with Attorney General James to root out public corruption across the state."

Thomas pleaded guilty to charges of Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class A misdemeanor, and Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the Second Degree, a class A misdemeanor. The guilty plea is in satisfaction of an indictment filed in Westchester County that stemmed from a joint investigation conducted by the Office of the Attorney General and the New York State Office of the Comptroller.

As part of the plea agreement, Thomas admitted that he knowingly and unlawfully appropriated contributions totaling approximately $13,000 from his campaign committee, the Friends of Richard Thomas, during his 2015 mayoral candidacy, for his own personal use.

Thomas also admitted that he knowingly and falsely filed a 27 Day Post-General Disclosure report with the New York State Board of Electionswhere he admitted that he did not disclose that he received a $4,000 payment from his campaign committee. On that report, Thomas also claimed to have received a $2,500 reimbursement payment from his campaign committee, but he did not expend personal funds warranting such reimbursement.

Since 2011, The Attorney General’s Office and the State Comptroller’s Office have worked together to fight corruption through their Joint Task Force on Public Integrity. They have brought charges against dozens of individuals implicated in public corruption schemes around the state – resulting in the return of over $11 million in restitution to taxpayers through these convictions.

The investigation was handled by Investigator Angel LaPorte, under the supervision of Supervising Investigator Sylvia Rivera and Deputy Chief Investigator John McManus. The Attorney General’s Investigations Division is led by Acting Chief Investigator John Reidy.  Assisting in the investigation and providing forensic auditing analysis was former Senior Auditor Investigator Alex Ozechowski, under the supervision of Deputy Chief Auditor Sandy Bizzarro. The Forensic Audit Section is led by Chief Auditor Edward J. Keegan, Jr. Also assisting in the investigation was Analyst Rebecca Saber and former analyst Katharine Litka.

The prosecution was handled for the Attorney General’s Office by Assistant Attorney General Brian P. Weinberg, Special Counsel to the Public Integrity Bureau, and Assistant Attorney General Meagan E. Powers under the supervision of Public Integrity Bureau Deputy Bureau Chief Stacy Aronowitz. The Public Integrity Bureau is overseen by Chief Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice José Maldonado.

The Comptroller’s investigation was conducted by the Comptroller’s Division of Investigations.

CNN Breaking News.

In a major reversal, the Justice Department told a federal judge in Maryland on Wednesday that it has been "instructed to examine whether there is a path forward consistent with the Supreme Court's decision, that would allow us to include the citizenship question on the census."

The shift comes after President Donald Trump tweeted earlier on Wednesday that "we are absolutely moving forward, as we must" on the citizenship question, despite statements Tuesday from both his Department of Justice and his secretary of commerce that the administration was printing the census without the question.

Jody Hunt, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Division, told the judge that if they find a viable path, they plan to go to the Supreme Court for "instructions ... to simplify and expedite the remaining litigation and provide clarity to the process going forward."
