Yonkers Insider/Westchester Insider: Election Desk 2022 News: PRESS RELEASE: Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker Declares Candidacy for Congress in Newly Drawn 16th District.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 24, 2022.

Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker Declares Candidacy for Congress in Newly Drawn 16th District.

WESTCHESTER, NY– Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker has declared her intention to run against incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman in the newly drawn 16th District.  Parker is an experienced legislator with a strong record of fighting climate change, leading Westchester’s efforts to safeguard our environment and delivering practical results that make a difference in people’s lives.

During her time in the County Legislature, Parker has secured millions of dollars for flood resilience projects along Westchester’s sound shore and led an effort to create a countywide flood mitigation fund for the first time in County history.

“I have always been passionate about our environment; it was one of my biggest motivators for getting into government.  I ran for my local City Council to help make sure my kids had a safe environment to grow up in and got hooked on the opportunity for solutions on a more regional level in the County.  Now, with so many critical issues of the environment, safety, health and affordability on the debate stage in Washington, I am eager to help move our federal government in the practical progressive direction needed to address these challenges,” Parker said.

Parker’s record of accomplishment directly contrasts that of incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman.  Bowman voted against President Biden’s infrastructure package that has created jobs and helped address climate change by funding infrastructure projects like the ones Parker has been delivering for over a decade in government.

Parker explained, “The Congressman is an educator. He understands that the purpose of government is to do the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people but I believe he failed at that when he voted against funding a litany of projects that will make a difference in the not-so-distant future.”

Catherine Parker’s entire County Legislative District, which She has represented since 2014, is in the newly-drawn 16th Congressional District.  Catherine was on the Rye City Council before the County Legislature and still lives in Rye with her husband David and children Julia and Aiden.

“I’m looking forward to a very spirited campaign because that is what we deserve with so many challenges ahead.  This will be the most consequential Congress in generations with everything at stake and nobody should be left behind because someone in Washington wanted to simply make a point,” Parker concluded.

Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District: State Assembly Meets on Illegal Guns.

In the wake of the two massacres the State Assembly put aside more routine tasks this week for a wide ranging conversation on what New York can do to increase the safety of our citizens. Governor Kathy Hochul has asked us to consider legislation to change the age to buy a semi-automatic weapon like an AR-15 style rifle from 18 to 21 years old. However, a Federal appeals court just struck down a similar law in California.

We will take action, and after the Memorial Day Holiday my colleagues and I will return to the Capitol for more meetings on what action we can take that would be upheld when challenged in the courts.

Yonkers Insider: Statement from New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District.

Friends,
I extend our deepest sympathy to the victims in Buffalo and Uvalde. This week, halfway across the country in South Texas, another 18 year-old yet again committed a heinous act of mass murder, with the same type of assault style weapon, this time targeting children and educators in a classroom. How can it be in our country that yet again, families will face a lifetime of unbearable loss and pain because these guns are so widely available and so lethal that 10 people at a grocery store or 19 school children and two teachers, are gone in a few minutes? We cannot accept these mass shootings as the new normal, and we owe it to our children, our seniors, and or

Schools and teachers across the nation will hold additional Active Shooter Drills, while here in New York, State and local police will be actively checking on school buildings.

In addition, I'm pleased that this week, New York successfully defended a lawsuit brought by gun manufacturers in Federal Court. This suit aimed to challenge a gun violence law that I helped pass last year which gives the victims of gun violence the ability to sue gun manufacturers. In the absence of substantive action from the Federal Government on addressing gun violence, we will rise to the challenge in New York State to do what it takes to keep our residents safe. I thank groups like Moms Demand Action and Everytown For Gun Safety that have turned moments of tragedy into action to help stop the scourge of gun violence.

New York State has passed laws to prevent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from buying guns, cracked down on illegal gun sales and banned the sale of the most dangerous assault weapons. We also passed a Red Flag Law to allow citizens to ask the Courts to intervene when someone appears to be an imminent threat to themselves or others. We will continue to pass laws and support law enforcement officials in their efforts to stop gun violence. However, one State acting alone will not turn the tide. It would require the Congress to act.
