Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker Declares Candidacy for Congress in Newly Drawn 16th District.
WESTCHESTER, NY– Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker has declared her intention to run against incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman in the newly drawn 16th District. Parker is an experienced legislator with a strong record of fighting climate change, leading Westchester’s efforts to safeguard our environment and delivering practical results that make a difference in people’s lives.
During her time in the County Legislature, Parker has secured millions of dollars for flood resilience projects along Westchester’s sound shore and led an effort to create a countywide flood mitigation fund for the first time in County history.
“I have always been passionate about our environment; it was one of my biggest motivators for getting into government. I ran for my local City Council to help make sure my kids had a safe environment to grow up in and got hooked on the opportunity for solutions on a more regional level in the County. Now, with so many critical issues of the environment, safety, health and affordability on the debate stage in Washington, I am eager to help move our federal government in the practical progressive direction needed to address these challenges,” Parker said.
Parker’s record of accomplishment directly contrasts that of incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman. Bowman voted against President Biden’s infrastructure package that has created jobs and helped address climate change by funding infrastructure projects like the ones Parker has been delivering for over a decade in government.
Parker explained, “The Congressman is an educator. He understands that the purpose of government is to do the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people but I believe he failed at that when he voted against funding a litany of projects that will make a difference in the not-so-distant future.”
Catherine Parker’s entire County Legislative District, which She has represented since 2014, is in the newly-drawn 16th Congressional District. Catherine was on the Rye City Council before the County Legislature and still lives in Rye with her husband David and children Julia and Aiden.
“I’m looking forward to a very spirited campaign because that is what we deserve with so many challenges ahead. This will be the most consequential Congress in generations with everything at stake and nobody should be left behind because someone in Washington wanted to simply make a point,” Parker concluded.
