Yonkers Insider: New York League of Conservation Voters: Environmental News for May 31st.
Here’s what we’re reading this week:
CLCPA Scoping Plan
Lunch & Learn
On Wednesday, May 18th, NYLCVEF and our partner Sustainable Westchester held a virtual Lunch and Learn focused on the Scoping Plan for New York's Climate Leadership and Communication Protection Act (CLCPA), among the most ambitious climate laws in the world that requires New York to transition to a zero-emission electricity sector.
The Clean Fuel Standard: Reducing New York's Transportation Emissions
The Clean Fuels NYCoalition, led by the New York League of Conservation Voters, was formed to showcase the widespread support for New York State to create a clean fuel standard (also known as a low-carbon fuel standard) and reduce GHG emissions from the transportation sector, which accounts for 35% of overall state emissions.
Lots of flotsam and jetsam is floating through Albany during the final days of the legislative session but it is finally time to deal with an actual trash problem: New York’s outdated and unworkable recycling laws. An overhaul is needed. The good news is that after much delay, Gov. Kathy Hochul and the environmental chairs of both chambers are negotiating, but there seems to be a troubling lack of urgency in the Assembly to finalize a deal.
Op-Ed | We must work together to move towards an equitable transition away from fossil fuels
The implementation of New York’s landmark Climate Law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, is at a crossroads. If we are to succeed in achieving the aggressive climate emissions reductions and the equity mandates under the law, swift and urgent action will be required every year by the legislature and by every state agency. The Climate Law requires that as we transition away from fossil fuels across the economy we must do so equitably, with investments and benefits flowing directly into communities disproportionately impacted by climate change and ensure workers are uplifted by the clean energy economy.
NYC Council signs off on 24/7 speed enforcement cameras
City Council members approved a “home rule request” Thursday, giving the state Legislature the go-ahead to pass a three-year extension and expansion of New York City’s speed camera program that allows them to operate 24/7 -- a bill included in NYLCV's Legislative Scorecard.
