Yonkers Insider: Statement from New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District.

Friends,

We are thrilled to share the success of the Yonkers Yoga Festival, a wonderful celebration of wellness and community spirit held at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers on Thursday, June 27th. This inspiring event was meticulously organized by our dedicated Constituent Services and Yoga & Wellness Specialist, Chandra Sookdeo.

The festival offered a number of activities aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being. Participants had the opportunity to experience an enlightening Yoga Asana class led by the esteemed Chairman of the Global Yoga Community, Guruji Dileepkumar Thankappan. His expert instruction and deep knowledge of yoga resonated with attendees, enriching their understanding and practice.

We were honored to host distinguished guests such as Senator Shelley B. Mayer and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, whose presence underscored the event's importance in fostering community engagement and advocating for healthy lifestyles.

Against the backdrop of Tibbetts Brook Park, attendees enjoyed not only the physical benefits of yoga but also the chance to connect with neighbors and friends in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. The festival embodied our commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Yonkers, promoting wellness initiatives, and strengthening community bonds.

Today I sponsored an event for The Youth & Senior Empowerment Foundation. Congratulations to the founder of the foundation Millie Gutiérrez and her staff and volunteers and we thank them for all that they do in our community!

I exercised my vote and voted in this year's Democratic primary. I urge all constituents to participate in Democracy by voting in the upcoming General Election. The urgency was clear as we mobilized our community to ensure their voices were heard highlighting the impact of every vote in shaping the future of our party.

With the upcoming 4th of July weekend, I urge all our constituents, especially our youth to stay safe, read often, but most importantly, have fun!

I again call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza! I urge all involved parties to engage in negotiations for a lasting peace agreement, which includes the release of all hostages and prisoners. Additionally, it is imperative that the international community promptly addresses the hunger and starvation affecting the population in Gaza. From the start of this conflict, nearly 40,000 have died, 80,000 are injured, and 1.5 million Palestinians have been displaced from their home.

Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblywoman MaryJane Shimsky 92nd District: Expanded EmPower+ Program.

It is vital that we reduce energy costs for New Yorkers and transition away from fossil fuels in order to combat climate change. New York State’s newly expanded EmPower+ program will allow more low-income families to improve their homes with energy efficiency and electrification upgrades.

Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblywoman MaryJane Shimsky 92nd District: Foundation Aid Study Public Hearings.

New York State’s Enacted State Fiscal Year 2024-25 Budget called for the Rockefeller Institute to conduct a study to assess the State’s Foundation Aid education funding formula - https://rockinst.org/foundation-aid-study/ and discuss potential modifications to how the formula works.

As part of the study, researchers at the Rockefeller Institute are collecting feedback from the public and education stakeholders, including school families, teachers, staff, administrators, school boards, appointed and elected officials, education researchers and experts, and education-focused support and advocacy organizations. Stakeholders can share input on the Foundation Aid formula by providing verbal comment at a public hearing and/or submitting written comment through an online form.

I am disappointed that a public hearing was not scheduled in the Hudson Valley. I strongly encourage individual and institutional advocates in our region to participate via written comment if attending one of the in-person events is not possible or feasible.

Provide Verbal Comment at a Public Hearing

This summer, the Rockefeller Institute will be hosting five public hearings, with the generous support of local school districts across the state. The purpose of the hearings is to allow Rockefeller Institute researchers to listen directly to the education community and to record verbal feedback from a range of education stakeholders.

Invited stakeholder testimony will begin at 2:00 p.m. and public comment for registered speakers will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the following events:

  • July 16, 2024 - New York City
High School of Fashion Industries, 225 W 24th Street, New York, NY 10011

  • July 25, 2024 - Western New York
North Park Community School, 780 Parkside Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14216

  • July 30, 2024 - Long Island
Weldon E. Howitt Middle School, 50 Vancott Avenue, Farmingdale, NY 11735

  • August 8, 2024 - Central New York
Laurens Central School, 55 Main Street, Laurens, NY 13796

  • August 14, 2024 - Capital Region
Guilderland High School, 8 School Road, Guilderland Center, NY 12085

Members of the education community are invited and encouraged to attend a hearing and provide input on potential changes to the Foundation Aid formula through public comment.

If you are interested in signing up to speak at a hearing, please click here to access our online Speaker Registration Form - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FA-Speaker-Registration

Submit Written Comment through the Online Form

Education stakeholders across New York State are also encouraged to share input on potential changes to the Foundation Aid formula through the submission of written comments.

Now through Friday, September 6, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. (EST) interested members of the public can submit written feedback on the Foundation Aid formula online via the Written Comment Submission Form - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FA-Written-Comment.

Incorporating Stakeholder Feedback into the Foundation Aid Study

The Rockefeller Institute will review all verbal and written comments from stakeholders that are collected at the public hearings and via the online Written Comment Submission Form - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FA-Written-Comment. This feedback will be incorporated into the Foundation Aid formula study and will be used to inform the Institute’s final report on findings and discussion of policy options, which will be presented to the Governor, the Temporary President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the Assembly in early December 2024.

Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblywoman MaryJane Shimsky 92nd District: Legislation to Expand and Amend Insurance Coverage for Severe Weather Events.

Before the close of this year's legislative session, the Assembly and Senate passed a pair of bills designed to help homeowners prepare for severe weather events and expand insurance coverage to better support recovery efforts:

  • Direct the Department of Financial Services (DFS) to conduct a study to examine any increases in property insurance premiums that may affect the affordability of property insurance coverage, any lack of availability of property insurance coverage for losses from flooding, and the possibility of supporting a private flood insurance market in New York (A.8942).

  • Expand eligibility for the Coastal Market Assistance Program (C-MAP) to properties located within one mile of a salt-water ocean, sound, bay and inlet, as well as Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, the Saint Lawrence River, the Niagara River, and more as determined by the New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (A.9821).

These additional bills passed the Assembly this year and may be re-introduced during the next session for a vote by both houses of the Legislature:

  • Require DFS to implement the homeowner natural disaster preparedness, home safety, and loss prevention program authorized in the Enacted State Fiscal Year 2016-2017 Budget (A.0136).

  • Authorize the sale of “parametric insurance,” which provides a set payment amount to policyholders based on the magnitude and proximity of a severe weather event to their insured property (A.10344).

  • Provide homeowners further coverage for water damage from backed-up sewers or sump pumps by prohibiting insurance policies from excluding coverage for damage covered under a policy on the ground that the damage was caused directly or indirectly by a peril that is excluded from the policy, such as flooding (A.10343).

These awards were made available through the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and are being administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblywoman MaryJane Shimsky 92nd District: Traffic Advisory.

***TRAFFIC ALERT***

Lane Closures on I-87/I-287 in Tarrytown.

Starting 10 PM Tonight – Friday, June 28.

Work to install a new 270-foot-long pedestrian/bicycle bridge over I-87/I-287 in Tarrytown will require overnight lane closures and multiple traffic stops in both directions on Friday, June 28. The operation is anticipated to last approximately 10 hours, beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, June 28 and finishing by 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. Motorists are strongly encouraged to travel outside of these work hours or seek alternate routes to avoid potential travel delays. In case of rain, the work will take place Saturday night into Sunday morning.

The new pedestrian bridge is part of a $13.9 million two-year multimodal project along Route 9/South Broadway -  https://www.thruway.ny.gov/oursystem/route9/index.html that began in spring 2023 and is funded by both the State Thruway Authority and Department of Transportation. Contractor crews began assembling the bridge’s 12 truss sections on June 3. The bridge measures 270 feet long, 16 feet wide, and 15 feet tall, and is the centerpiece of a multifaceted project to extend the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge side path one mile south to Lyndhurst Mansion. The project will also add a second left turn lane from South Broadway to the southbound Thruway entrance ramp and install a traffic signal on Route 9 at Paulding Avenue to make it safer to turn left, among other improvements for residents, motorists, visitors, and area businesses.

Yonkers Insider: New York Rap Legend Styles P to launch 'Juices 2 Heal' this Saturday (6/29).

Styles P To Launch 'Juices 2 Heal', Hosts Grand Opening Event In White Plains This Saturday (6/29).

Congressman Jamaal Bowman, White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, And White Plains City Council Members Expected To Be In Attendance.

New York, NY (6/28/2024) --  Veteran New York rapper Styles P of the legendary Rap trio The LOX has dedicated over a decade of his career to helping build healthy communities through his health and wellness ventures Juices For Life and, more recently, Farmacy For Life. On Saturday, June 29 2024, the rapper, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and health advocate is set to completely overhaul the Juices for Life brand and officially launch Juices 2 Heal. At 11am EST, there will be a special ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the White Plains juice bar, located at 180 Grand St., White Plains, New York, NY 10604. Congressman Jamaal Bowman, White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and White Plains City Council Members are all expected to be in attendance.

The remaining Juices For Life bars located in The Bronx and Yonkers will all carry the new name, Juices 2 Heal.

MORE ABOUT STYLES P:

Styles P is one of the most sought after MCs of his generation. Born David Styles in Queens, New York and raised in Yonkers, P rose to prominence as one-third of  the world renowned trio The LOX. Styles, along with his fellow group members Jadakiss and Sheek Louch, were discovered by superstar singer, fellow Yonkers, NY native Mary J. Blige in 1994. The three man team then came up in music under two of the most storied hip-hop Dynasties; the Sean “Diddy” Combs led Bad Boy Records and the DMX-helmed Ruff Ryders label. Styles has been one of rap’s most consistent and lauded lyricists since then.

Styles P's solo debut, A Gangster and a Gentleman (2002), was led by the Swizz Beatz-produced hit single "Good Times." Four years later, he returned under the billing Styles P as Ruff Ryders released his much-delayed sophomore album, Time Is Money in December of 2006. Almost exactly one year from that date, signed to Koch Records, the rapper issued his third studio full-length, Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman) (2007). In 2010 he was a featured guest on Rick Ross' massive hit "BMF (Blowin' Money Fast)," while 2011 saw him release the Master of Ceremonies album. In 2012 he issued The World's Most Hardest MC Project with producers like AraabMUZIK and Jahlil Beats behind the boards, but 2013's Float was produced exclusively by Scram Jones. An accidental leak of his 2015 album A Wise Guy and a Wise Guy led to its early release as the MC dropped the 20-track LP in October of that year.

15 solo albums and six collaborative projects later, Styles remains an integral piece to the legacy of The LOX, but has pledged his retirement from his solo career to dedicate more of his time to the health and wellness space. Styles aims to further bridge the gap between Hip-Hop and healthy living through his latest venture  Farmacy For Life. Billed as “Hip-Hop’s first natural health food store", Farmacy For Life was established by Styles and his wife Adjua as an extension of their line of juice bars Juices For Life, which launched soon after Styles P adopted a plant-based diet. Continuing their mission of building healthy communities, Farmacy For Life recently collaborated with Swiss chef Daniel Humm's Eleven Madison Home for the launch of Little Farma Box and Styles PB&J. Styles P's nonprofit organization Farma Cares teamed with the Yonkers Family YMCA for their first ever 'Plant Based Community Dine-In Night' in 2023. With a menu curated by Styles and his wife Adjua Styles, the inaugural event successfully served over 200 Yonkers residents, including families, elders, and young people.

Yonkers Insider: OPED by Marie Bell: The Race for Westchester District Attorney: A call for unity of vision in the face of defeat.

“In all things that are purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.”

Westchester County residents will have four months to ponder the above words of our famous educator, author, and orator, Booker T. Washington, as in early November it will be time to apply these words in electing our next Westchester District Attorney and other leaders, regardless of whom our choice was in the bygone Democratic Primary elections.

More importantly, this short period will also prove whether the two opposing candidates in the Primary will demonstrate their professed motivations during their respective campaigns to advance justice principles in the good of Westchester. This they can do by ignoring personal defeat and encouraging their supporters to embrace “mutual progress” in supporting the Democratic nominee, retired Judge, Susan Cacace. This action of forming a unifying front would augur well for both, in ensuring a legacy devoid of personal expediency and self-interest. Afterall, as once aspiring leaders, their loyal supporters are entitled to their direction now more than ever, having followed both of them in embracing a vision that did not resonate at the polls.

The test of a unifying leader has already been passed by the winning candidate Susan Cacace, when on June 20th five days before the Primary her campaign published a call for unity, “no matter the outcome,” And amidst the elation of Primary night and again, two days following, took the time to publicly remind Westchester that, “As we move forward, I’m committed to uniting our community. This victory belongs to all of us who believe in a fair and just legal system. Let’s rally behind this vision as we head into the general election.”  She further made a pledge to those who have not yet seen her vision, “To those who did not vote for me, I vow to work very hard through November to share my plans and vision for this office and earn your support so that we can emerge from this campaign cycle united as Democrats, as a County under the leadership of this District Attorney's Office and working toward safety through the balance of justice with compassion I’ve talked about.”

The vision she speaks of is the mutual progress expressed by Booker T. Washington.

Biography: Marie Bell is a resident of Westchester, an author, with recent sexual violence trauma-informed advocacy work at Columbia University, leadership in higher education criminal justice program, and law enforcement experience.
