MTA Pop-Up Vaccination Sites Extended at Grand Central, Penn Station, Through June 5.

If you haven't gotten your COVID-19 vaccination yet, you will have a chance to do so through the end of next week if you're traveling through Grand Central or Penn Stations.

New York State has announced that is is extending the operation of its free pop-up vaccination sites at those locations through Saturday, June 5.  That includes this Sunday, May 30, and Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.

The Grand Central pop up will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. The pop up at the Penn Station 34th Street corridor will operate from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All walk-in participants who receive the free, one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will also get their choice of two free, one-way Metro-North rail tickets or a seven-day unlimited MetroCard.

UNVEIL NEWLY RENOVATED PEDIATRIC MEDICAL OFFICE. 

White Plains Office Serves Westchester County’s Children in Foster Care.

 

(White Plains, NY) – Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Department of Social Services (DSS) Commissioner Leonard Townes and Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) Commissioner Hugh Greechan gathered to celebrate the completion of a major renovation of the DSS Pediatric Medical Office. The facility, located at 112 East Post Road in White Plains, serves children in foster care from birth through age 21 with in-person medical services. The medical services provided include preventative health care, vision and hearing screening, illness evaluation, vaccines, blood draws and limited rapid testing.  Medical staff also assist with completing forms (WIC, daycare, school and camp) and work collaboratively with DSS caseworkers and Family Court personnel throughout a child’s placement in foster care. 

 

Latimer said: “I am incredibly proud of the County employees at DSS and DPW&T, who worked so hard on this renovation which ultimately helps us to better serve Westchester County’s foster families. The remodeled office, complete with bright paint, new flooring, children’s books and games, creates a welcoming environment for the children who receive medical care here. This is one more wonderful way that Westchester County’s Department of Social Services takes care of its children in foster care, making us a cut above the rest.”

 

Townes said: “The Westchester County Department of Social Services is paving the way for departments across the state, as one of only two counties that have a pediatric medical office available for children in foster care. The children who come here for pediatric care are the County’s children, they are our responsibility. Thanks to the efforts of our Public Works Department, the remodeling of this space shows that we are committed to ensuring kids are well cared for and supported.”

 

The improvements to the medical office included the re-configuration of space to add private meeting rooms for families and medical staff, separate offices for medical staff, a new nurses' station, and better storage for medical records. The work was completed by DPW&T staff who consulted with pediatric office staff on what they wanted.

 

Greechan said: “The Department of Public Works and Transportation worked to renovate the pediatric office quickly, and during off hours so medical services would not be interrupted. We understand how important this facility is to the families who need it, and we hope that this renovated office will feel like a safe and welcoming space for them to keep visiting.”    

 

Westchester County is one of only two counties in New York State to provide comprehensive medical services dedicated to children in family foster care. The four nurses who staff the Unit are DSS employees. Two Board-certified pediatricians and office support staff are contracted through the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD).

 

The office serves about 400 children annually, with an average of 230 children on the roster at any one time. It is open by appointment Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and pediatricians are on call for emergencies evenings, weekends and holidays.

 

Medical Director of the Pediatric Unit Dr. Janet Stockheim said: “We are a full-service medical unit dedicated exclusively to supporting the children and families involved in the foster care system. We’re their medical home. In the world of Social Services, we’re a rare gem, and now we’re polished. We’re so grateful to our Westchester County leadership.”

Our Continued Conversation with Lauren Carter, A Woman on a Mission to Help Restore Her City

 

 

Ernest Agyemang Yeboah penned the phrase, “The great works we see are just ideas until they receive the real energy, which transforms ideas into tangible artifacts. When you conceive an idea, it find its energy”.

          “Compassion, commitment, and service-these are the characteristics that define my life’s purpose and work,”  Lauren Carter tells UMERADIO on last Saturday’s Weekends with Marsha J and Jesse.

In a follow-up conversation with Lauren Carter, Democrat for Mount Vernon City Council, and the woman on a mission to restore her beloved Mount Vernon to its former glory, she shares her thoughts and insights into the tools that make a city thrive; and her plans on how to restore and reposition Mount Vernon.

“My mission, first and foremost, is to be a servant-leader, to listen to all stakeholders and ensure I am always accessible.  It is my goal to help improve the city when I am elected as a member of the city council”, she tells us.

“I believe quality of life is the very foundation of a good city. We don’t want a mediocre city.  We don’t want a second-rate city.  We don’t a want a substandard city.”

Lauren is clear that having a mediocre, second-rate, or substandard city will only lead to further decline. Should she be elected, we can look forward to her addressing issues such as littering, dog feces that is not properly disposed of, and superintendents that place trash on the street for sanitation pick-up far too early. 

Lauren will press the administration to enforce codes in the areas of littering, speeding, and more.  She will advocate for the funding of additional ordinance officer positions to facilitate the quality-of-life initiative.  And she will encourage beautification efforts like planting flowers, less obtrusive trees, and community gardens to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the community.

Under her mission of public safety reform, she says, “It is something that is definitely needed”.  She believes one of the ways to effectuate reform is to correct legislation that was adopted by the city council for the creation and funding of a Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB).  This independent body will be in place for citizens to lodge complaints against police officers without being required to report grievances to the police department.  “It can be intimidating and cause some people not to follow up”, says Lauren.  Lauren believes police reform should also include enhanced training for police officers to learn better de-escalation tactics.  This will be particularly important when interacting with and responding to the homeless and mentally ill populations.

As an urban planner, Lauren knows the importance of having a comprehensive plan to direct future growth and development of any city.  She also knows that the plan should be balanced to incorporate the city’s long-range goals for land use, housing, economic development, and recreation. “As a planner, we also have to review the city's current infrastructure-like sewers and streets-to ensure there is sufficient capacity to handle growth,” Lauren says.

Lauren is uniquely qualified because she has experience of close to two (2) decades working for the city, inclusive of working for the executive branch with former mayors in the planning department.  She also has experience of working for the city council, the legislative branch of government, as deputy city clerk.

Being a servant-leader and making sure Mount Vernon has the necessary tools to be repositioned and restored are important to Lauren.  It is how she will approach the responsibility as a council member.  “This is what motivates me. It is what I am passionate about… it is my purpose… it is my plan.”

Lavin comes to the Office of New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer from Westchester County, where she worked as a media and communications manager. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked closely with County Executive George Latimer to keep residents up to date with the latest information about their community. Additionally, Lavin produced a video series to prepare children for the return of in-person learning and led a social media campaign to promote small businesses during the holiday shopping season. 

Prior to her work with the county, she studied Economics and English at Binghamton University, where she graduated from. During this time, she also worked as a reporter for a local television station and interned with the local ice hockey team.

BOARD APPROVES $22.4K FOR RESTART OF MT. VERNON YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM.

After COVID Pause, Popular Program Will Be Back This Summer.

 

White Plains, NY —   The popular Mount Vernon summer youth basketball program is getting back on the court after being sidelined by COVID-19 in 2020.

On Monday night, the Board of Legislators unanimously approved an agreement between the county and the city to operate the program five days a week beginning July 12 and running through August 13.  The county will pay $22,400 to help operate the program which will operate out of the Mount Vernon High School gym, Monday-Friday from 1-5 p.m.

The program, which serves up to 90 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17, not only deals in basketball skills and drills, but also life skills, with new speakers joining the youngsters each week.

Leg. Tyrae Woodson-Samuels (D - Mount Vernon), said, "This has been one of the most popular and valuable summer programs for young people in the city for many years now, guided by Mount Vernon's great high school basketball coach Bob Cimmino.  This is a program that does more than just teach kids how to execute a pick and roll, it teaches leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution and cooperation.  Like so many things, it took a pause last summer because of COVID, but I'm ecstatic that my colleagues have joined me in supporting this agreement between the county and the city to get young people back into the gym this summer."

Leg. David Tubiolo (D- Mount Vernon, Yonkers), said, "I've been a proud supporter of the Mount Vernon youth summer basketball program for years. It is unfortunate the 2020 summer program was lost to COVID, but it's fantastic to know that the program will be back in action this summer, just when young people, like everyone else, need an opportunity to get out, get together, and being the process of getting back to life."

Find out how new state and federal rent relief can help you by viewing my special Tenants’ Rights Forum today, May 27, at 6:00 p.m. Legal Services of the Hudson Valley will give a presentation on the latest state and federal laws that protect residents from eviction, and how eligible households can get a rental subsidy that would be delivered directly to their landlord.
