Dear Friends,  This summer has absolutely flown by. I cannot believe we are already in August! This weekend, Saturday, August 3, I am proud to be a partner for the Access to Care Health Fair at Open Door in the Village of Mamaroneck. You can come anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for information about health and wellness from community-based organizations while you enjoy fun activities, entertainment, and raffles for the whole family!  School supplies are key to classroom success, but they can be expensive. If you are able, please consider donating to my Student and Teacher Back-to-School Drive with the United Way of Westchester and Putnam. We have drop-off locations at my office in White Plains, at the Town of Mamaroneck Town Hall, the Pound Ridge Town House, and the Grinton I. Will Library in Yonkers. Deadline to donate is Saturday, August 10.  It has been a thrill to watch the incredible athletes competing in the Paris Olympics! I am so proud of Claire Weinstein, the 17-year-old native of White Plains who helped the United States win silver in the women’s 200 meter freestyle.  Congratulations on a fantastic Olympic showing, Claire!

Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblywoman MaryJane Shimsky 92nd District: —ALERT— Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus Found in Westchester County.

 

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus were recently found in Croton, Mount Vernon, Rye, White Plains, and Yonkers. These are the first positives out of 45 batches of mosquitos collected from eight Westchester  locations that were tested for West Nile Virus by the New York State Department of Health. The Health Department will inspect areas surrounding the positive mosquito batches and, if needed, treat any nearby catch basins that hold standing water to protect against further mosquito breeding nearby. 

Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, body aches, and joint pain, but can be more serious for people 60 and older, and those with underlying medical conditions.

This weekend is a big weekend here in Yonkers, with our 11th annual ALS Ice Bucket Challenge taking place tomorrow, August 3rd, at Empire City Casino. This event is a testament to the compassion and solidarity of our residents as we come together to raise awareness and funds for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) research. By taking part in this challenge, we honor those affected by ALS and contribute to the vital efforts needed to find a cure. My final remark is sent to the family of Legislator, Hon. Herman Keith, District 16 (1984-1995), who was the first African American to hold the position and inspired others to continue the needed work and representation: Hon. Andrea Stewart-Cousins (1996-2006), Ken Jenkins (2007-20217), Christopher Johnson (2017-2023), Hon. Symra Brandon (2023), and myself (2024-present).

I am very grateful to stand on the shoulders of Hon. Keith and those who came before me, and I will do all I can to honor his legacy and serve the community with excellence. May God continue to comfort you.

Hundreds to Gather Trackside at Empire City Casino’s Yonkers Raceway for Simultaneous Ice Bucket Challenge to Benefit ALS Research.

 

 

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts along with the ‘Quinn for the Win Foundation’ will host the 11^th annual ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Saturday, August 3 beginning at 1 p.m. at Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts with the ice bucket dump scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

 

The event, co-founded by Yonkers resident Pat Quinn after his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2013 at the age of 29, became a global phenomenon in 2014 as millions of people around the world participated in the challenge via social media. The event continues to remain a catalyst for raising funds to support research to identify a cure for the debilitating disease.

Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers City Councilman Anthony Merante 6th District: FEMA STICKS YONKERS WITH A $5.2 MILLION BILL FOR HURRICANE IDA EMERGENCY REPAIRS.

FEMA STCKS YONKERS WITH A $5.2 MILLION BILL FOR HURRICANE

IDA EMERGENCY REPAIRS.

YONKERS TAXPAYERS NOW MUST FOOT THE BILL.

 

( YONKERS, NY, August 1. 2024) In September of 2021,  Hurricane Ida devastated the lower Hudson Valley, Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has now denied the City of Yonkers over $5.2 million.  These were monies required to stabilize three slopes along the Hudson River and MTA Metro North Railroad.

 

The concentrated water flow caused substantial damage to the slope supporting Warburton Avenue, the homes, and a residential building, washing thousands of tons of soil down onto the Metro North Hudson Line railroad track. A residential building is virtually hanging over the cliff. A retaining wall is required to stabilize the three slopes to ensure the safety of the residents living in the apartment building.

 

Merante said, “ Our neighbors living alongside the Warburton Avenue hills must cringe every time it rains, thinking will this be the time the building slides and collapses. We are putting hundreds of lives in jeopardy and DC turns it’s back on Yonkers.  I don’t understand.  We have Democrats up and down the entire governmental ladder, Yonkers Mayor, City Council Majority, New York State Delegation and US House and Senate.  Still Yonkers taxpayers are left paying the bill for this declared Federal Disaster. This $5.2 million will need to be bonded thereby incurring thousands of dollars more in interest charges,”

 

Merante added, “ Where is the Democratic team? They should start applying pressure on the Federal delegation to force FEMA to meet its responsibilities . Afterall, we are in the last quarter of a Presidential election. Yonkers Democrats should even take this plea directly to Vice President Kamala Harris.” 

 

Merante concluded, “I’m extremely disappointed our elected officials will not fight for the people of Yonkers and force FEMA to honor its obligations. They are simply willing to shrug off another debt on Yonkers taxpayers, that’s unconscionable.”

YONKERS, NY – August 1, 2024 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the launch of the City’s annual “Backpack to School” donation drive. The 13^th annual donation drive provides backpacks and school supplies to Yonkers Public Schools students most in need.

 

“In Yonkers, our aim is to bolster our children’s education and empower them to reach their academic aspirations,” said Mayor Spano. “To achieve this, we must furnish them with the necessary resources and support, recognizing that purchasing school supplies can pose financial difficulties for numerous families.”

 

“We believe every child in Yonkers deserves the tools necessary for success in school. Providing backpacks and school supplies is more than just giving materials - it's a way to show our students and families that their city is invested in their success.” noted Superintendent of Schools Aníbal Soler, Jr. “We are grateful to Mayor Spano for his commitment to this tradition, which has had a significant positive impact on our students' educational journeys.

The latest survey on school supplies for 2024 from the National Retail Federation (NRF) determined that families with kids in grades K-12 expect to spend $874.68 on clothing, shoes, school supplies and electronics. This is approximately $15 less than last year’s record of $890.07 but is the second-highest amount in the survey’s history. Total back-to-school spending is expected to reach $38.8 billion, also the second-highest figure on record, after last year’s high of $41.5 billion.

Yonkers Insider: Washington State Children's Hospital Halts Puberty Blockers/Transgender Surgeries on Minors, While New York Seeks to Keep Parents in the Dark.

…As New York State Seeks to Block Parental Guidance with

Controversial Prop One Initiative.

 

New York - Aug. 1…A children’s hospital in highly-progressive Washington State has announced that, after carefully reviewing emerging science, surgical and medical gender transformation procedures on children will be halted because of potentially devastating physical and psychological consequences to the children, many of whom are prepubescent, the nonpartisan Coalition to Protect Kids - NY today revealed. 

 

Meanwhile, ideologues in Albany continue their blind push to pass a controversial “Equal Rights Amendment” (AKA “The Parent Replacement Act”) that would ban parents from knowing if a child is mentally struggling with their identity. Most gender-confused children gain clarity over time. The Constitutional ballot initiative is also known as “Prop One.”

 

“Hardline ideologues in the State Legislature are actively working to harm children; there’s simply no polite way to say it,” said Coalition to Protect Kids - NY spokeswoman Ayesha Kreutz.  “They know that giving puberty blockers to 11 and 12 year olds, or surgically removing the breasts of impressionable young girls, is now considered abhorrent in much of the Western World. One European nation after another is moving to stop these experimental procedures on children, but Albany ideologues refuse to hear the message.”

 

The nonpartisan Coalition to Protect Kids - NY includes members of the LGBTQ+ community concerned about the lifelong impacts these procedures can have on vulnerable children.

 

The British High Court just upheld a ban on puberty blockers for children, following dramatic reversals on puberty blockers by other European nations.

 

“Our inclusive Coalition, which includes progressives and conservatives alike who sharply disagree with the amendment proposal, is incredulous that Prop One is even on the ballot,” Ms. Kreutz continued. "This carelessly worded proposal would take parents out of the equation in arguably the biggest life-decision these young kids will ever make. If this dangerous Constitutional Amendment passes in New York, good luck ever getting rid of it. It's the children who will suffer.” 

 

The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY is a nonpartisan ballot issue committee registered with the New York State Board of Elections. It is composed of New Yorkers from all walks of life dedicated to defeating the so-called Equal Rights Amendment to the New York State Constitution.
