FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CITY OF YONKERS FIRE DEPARTMENT DEPLOYS SPECIAL OPERATIONS WATER TENDER AMID EXTREME DRY CONDITIONS.
YONKERS, NY – November 8, 2024 – Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers Fire Department announced today the deployment of the City’s water tender. Due to ongoing dry weather and a regional water shortage, the water tender is ready to support firefighting efforts, particularly for large-scale, fast-growing brush fires. The specialized vehicle is capable of bringing water to support the fireline when hydrants are not accessible.
“Our Yonkers Fire Department remains active and aware given the heightened dry conditions in our area,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Deploying this effective equipment in the event of a brush fire is essential in keeping our City safe.”
“Although our City has a dependable and plentiful water supply with our fire hydrants for fighting fires – this water tender gives us 5000 additional gallons,” said Yonkers Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick. “We can immediately deploy the water tender to remote areas where hydrants may not be nearby – especially along the parkways, golf courses, parkland and other open areas within the City that don’t normally require a nearby water source. Having this asset immediately available is a key component to our preparedness.”
The water tender is located at 470 Nepperhan Avenue and remains on standby for any necessary deployment.
