Shelley Mayer has been fighting for families for years, and has made it her special mission to speak up for those families whose needs are often the greatest. Families of children with pediatric cancer face enormous challenges, including the cost of care and the necessary support for their children to be educated. But too often, insurance coverage for essential services is denied.
Shelley introduced a bill to fix that, and it passed the Senate this year. The legislation forces medical insurance companies to cover certain neuropsychological evaluations which these children need to proceed with their education. Next year she intends to see it pass both the Senate and the Assembly, and signed by the Governor.
For her hard work and dedication to this cause, she was honored last Saturday by the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and the Making Headway Foundation. We hope you will watch the clip from CBS News here:
