CITY OF YONKERS TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS DAY.
Department of Public Works to Educate Yonkers Students on Public Works Services.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will join Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissioner Thomas G. Meier, Yonkers Public Schools students and staff Friday, May 17 at 11:00AM at School 32 (1 Montclair Place) to celebrate National Public Works Day.
Students from School 32 will spend the morning learning about the Public Works Department and its daily initiatives to improve the lives of Yonkers residents.
First to third grade and sixth grade students will tour various Public Works heavy-duty vehicles to gain an understanding of street sweeping, snow plowing, and garbage collection. Students will also learn about the City’s new Food Scrap Program and how they can help to keep Yonkers clean and green.
Yonkers Department of Public Works:
· Picks up over 200 million pounds of trash per year with 4.6 million stops each year
· Maintains over 1,000 miles of road per year
· Manages the 30 million gallons of water per day that passes through the City system
· Maintains over 25,000 manholes and cleans and repairs 11,500 catch basins per year
· Consists of over 370 employees
May 19-25, 2024 is National Public Works Week.
