Yonkers Insider: Yonkers City Council: PRESS RELEASE: Yonkers GOP Council Members Demand Court Action To Resolve Migrant Issue.

PRESS RELEASE.

YONKERS REPUBLICAN COUNCIL MEMBERS MERANTE AND BREEN SPONSOR RESOLUTION URGING MAYOR SPANO TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION TO SOLVE YONKERS MIGRANT DILEMMA.

Yonkers NY (June 5, 2023) Yonkers City Council members Anthony Merante (District 6) and Mike Breen, Minority Leader     (District 5)  have co-sponsored a resolution that was submitted on Friday June 2, 2023, to be included on the Tuesday, June 6, 2023 Council Rules Committee agenda.  They are seeking to have it placed on the June 13, 2023 City Council Stated meeting agenda.

( See resolution attached)

Council Member Merante said of the resolution,  “NYC Mayor Eric Adams has not been straight with Yonkers. His ambiguity is not fair to residents nor to these migrant families who are being shuffled around like cattle.  Adams has  presented no plan, no details as to the numbers of migrants coming or for how long. Now Mayor Spano is begging for money to defray the costs the City will bear. Adams received  1 billion dollars from the State to deal with this crisis. It’s time for Mayor Spano to stop saying “pretty please” and get tough. He must force Adams to divulge his plans by taking him to court as other communities have done successfully. School Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada said the district is ready to help any migrant children entering our already overburdened and underfunded  school system, if they are here for a year.  I refuse to standby and have our hard-working taxpayers get stuck picking up the tab for Eric Adams escapades. The people of Yonkers are compassionate, but we will not be a doormat for Adams.”

The resolution states, in part,  “Yonkers is requesting the governor of the State Of New York and the mayor of the City Of New York treat all people in a humane and respectful manner by putting an end to their inhumane and  ill-conceived treatment of undocumented migrants by herding them up and driving them from place to place like livestock with the end result of literally, without any advance notice or preparation, unexpectedly dumping these men, women and children in unsuspecting surrounding municipalities, including The City Of Yonkers, without providing adequate support and necessary resources.”

The resolution concludes “that if the foregoing measures do not or cannot stop the housing of undocumented migrants in hotels in the City of Yonkers then the City Council hereby resolves that the City of Yonkers must immediately seek an order of the Supreme Court of the State of New York enjoining the housing of migrants in hotels in the City of Yonkers until the State of New York and/or the City of New York present a detailed plan with adequate funding and resources to humanely accommodate the migrants while preserving the rights of the residents of the City of Yonkers,”
