YONKERS HISTORY: The City of Hills first newspaper, the Yonkers Herald was published in 1852 by Editor and Proprietor, Thomas Smith.
The newspaper was a four-page sheet which was printed on a hand press.
It was issued every Saturday morning at 2 cents a copy.
Outside of publishing the Yonkers Herald, Thomas Smith was a part of the Board of Education, a member of the Protection Engine and the Board of Village Trustees.
Later in Yonkers, the following three daily newspapers were published: The Statesman, Yonkers Gazette (succeeded the Yonkers Herald) and the Daily News.
Thomas Smith later published the first Daily Newspaper in Westchester County...
