Diwali, or the Festival of Lights is a celebration of light over darkness that includes good food, fireworks, colored sand, and special candles and lamps. My Assembly colleague Jenifer Rajkumar has introduced legislation, Assembly Bill A628, to create a New York City Schools Holiday for Diwali. Over 200,000 Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist New York City residents observe the festival of Diwali. Designating Diwali as a school holiday in New York City would provide the many New Yorkers observing the day with the same accommodation afforded those who observe other holidays such as Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr, Rosh Hashanah, and Christmas. School districts outside N.Y.C. are encouraged to also incorporate Diwali as a holiday in their schedule.
