Yonkers Insider: Statement from New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh.

Our entire nation continues to react to the recent devastating shootings that claimed the lives of dozens of innocent people. We must do whatever we can to stop this horrible loss of life that leaves families and communities devastated for a lifetime. As a former Yonkers School Principal I cannot imagine how the people in Uvalde Texas are coping. I have talked with my colleagues from Buffalo, and the horror of the grocery store shooting is inconceivable, but all to real. That is why this week in the State Assembly I am supporting a number of initiatives to Tighten Our Gun Safety Laws. I voted to support an Assembly Resolution that requests the United State Congress to re-impose the 1984 federal ban on the sale of assault weapons. I also voted this week for legislation to require Social Media Companies to provide a clearly accessible mechanism for users to report hateful content online (A.7865-A). In Buffalo, the perpetrator filmed his attack and live streamed the video on a social media platform. This kind of footage can serve to embolden other extremists. These hateful messages have to be removed immediately. To combat Gun Violence and Crime in our community, I am again this year, providing additional State funds to our Yonkers Police Department for Special De-Escalation Training. In the State Budget we passed in April, we secured an additional $1 million for Yonkers for Anti-Gun Violence Programs to keep guns off the streets and help our young people stay safe. Our Yonkers Police are to be commended for being accountable and proactive in reducing crime and making Yonkers one of the safest urban cities in our State.
