On Sunday, January 9, 2022 there was a major fire in the Bronx, which resulted in 17 fatalities. The City of Yonkers, and District 2 in particular, has also dealt with an increased number of fires as of late. While it is important to be there for those affected and to provide support, it is equally important to focus on fire prevention.
Here are a few fire safety tips: - Avoid tragedy: never use a natural gas or propane stove or your kitchen oven to heat your home.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using alternate heating sources like space heaters and wood burning stoves
- Never place a space heater within three feet of anything that may catch on fire, such as drapes, furniture or bedding, on top of furniture or near water, and never cover your space heater.
- Never leave children or pets unattended near a space heater, fireplace or wood burning stove.
My office is currently working on organizing a community meeting that will focus on residential fire safety. As soon as a date and time is secured, I will let you know. |
