City Hall Park, NY— Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 28th, at 11:30 AM, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Chairman of the Transportation Committee will be joining the New York Taxi Workers Alliance for a press conference calling on the City to use the generous federal funds Washington D.C sent the city to finally solve the debt crisis impacting medallion owner-drivers. After years of worsening hardship, owner-drivers were further devastated by the pandemic and are now facing the prospect of lifelong financial ruin.
The Federal Government has given the city $6 billion dollars in budgetary aid, which is $2 billion above its current deficit. Senator Chuck Schumer, who negotiated the funding package, has been vocal about the fact that the city has more than enough money to provide real relief for owner-drivers and not just the bankers who profited off their pain. It’s time for Mayor De Blasio to stop nickle and diming working-class immigrant families and provide them with the relief they deserve.
