Here’s what we’re reading this week:
Plastic Straws Are Out!
The New York City Council last week passed legislation to restrict food-service establishments from giving out single-use plastic straws, except upon request. This will cut the city’s plastic output that reaches our landfills and oceans.
Groups Gather to Support Electric Vehicles
A group of environmental advocates, including NYLCV, and elected officials held a press conference to call on the State Legislature to pass legislation that would make it easier for New Yorkers to purchase electric vehicles directly from manufacturers. NYLCV supports the legislation because it would encourage the growth of emission-free transportation.

New polling by the League of Conservation Voters and Data for Progress shows that President Biden's American Jobs Plan, which would invest in climate infrastructure and create green jobs, is overwhelmingly popular among voters. In New York, 87% of voters support the plan. (Crooked Media)
As part of Streets Week, New York City launched a new Open Boulevards program which keeps certain major thoroughfares open for outdoor dining, recreational activities, landscaping, and children's programming. NYLCV supports Open Boulevards, and is part of the NYC 25x25 campaign, because it improves air quality and increases access to open space. Other Streets Week announcements included lowering speed limits, a freight management plan, and new coastal zoning laws. (NBC New York)
