Diversity is not a slogan to me, and it never has been. I've been committed to making positive change since I stepped into public service in Bronxville, and since then as Ardsley Village Manager, Mayor of New Rochelle, and now Westchester County Clerk.
In New Rochelle, I appointed the first African American department head in the City’s history (the City Clerk), the first female City Court Judge (a woman of color), and permanently changed the City Charter from at-large elections to one voted by geographic wards—taking New Rochelle from a white City Council to one that reflects the diversity of the city itself.
I’ve applied these same values as County Clerk. When I was elected, the office was not attuned to Spanish-speaking residents. Now we have five positions that require employees be fluent. Women now hold the majority of top management positions. And the staff, which had been 85% white, is now broadly diverse and reflects the community we serve. All of Westchester benefits from these changes.
