Abinanti and Legislative Leaders Call for Cuomo to Resign.
Democrats across the country are trying to change the attitude in our communities to one of respect for all - no matter their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or political views. The face of New York to the rest of the world needs to be someone who exemplifies that respect for other people.
Numerous news media have reported on the toxic work environment - including sexual harassment - at the top level of the New York State government caused by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
Last weekend The Washington Post chronicled Cuomo's creating a toxic work environment in the government offices he has headed.
Assemblymember Abinanti issued this statement on March 3, 2021: "I call on Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to resign. He must spare New York the continued shame of having a governor whose actions evidence his clear disrespect for women. He no longer commands the respect necessary to lead New York. He is distracted and cannot give his undivided attention to continue safely navigating New Yorkers through the ongoing deadly pandemic. He is a distraction to the serious conversations necessary to completing an on-time budget." |

After Assemblymember Abinanti's statement and those of numerous other Assemblymembers and Senators, Democratic leadership issued the following statements.
Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins stated:
"Everyday there is another account that is drawing away from the business of government. We have allegations about sexual harassment, a toxic work environment, the loss of credibility surrounding the Covid-19 nursing home data and questions about the construction of a major infrastructure project. New York is still in the midst of this pandemic and is still facing the societal, health and economic impacts of it. We need to govern without daily distraction. For the good of the state Governor Cuomo must resign."
Speaker of the Assembly Carl Heastie stated:
"The allegations pertaining to the Governor that have been reported in recent weeks have been deeply disturbing, and have no place whatsoever in government, the workplace or anywhere else. I too share the sentiment of Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins regarding the Governor's ability to continue to lead this state. We have many challenges to address, and I think it is time for the Governor to seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of New York." |
