Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Edna Odell, great granddaughter of Col. John Odell, George Washington’s guide.

The Friends of Odell Rochambeau prepared a fascinating article about Edna Odell and her association with the historic Odell House on Ridge Road. THANK YOU for sharing this excellent article!

Re: Heroic Hartsdale Nurse, Edna Odell, A Story of Perseverance

The Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters in Hartsdale, NY are proud and excited to announce the publication on our website, www.odellrochambeau.org of our first primary source research article, Edna Odell, A Story of Perseverance. The article contains many photographs and quotes from documents found in the Odell House Collection now housed at the Westchester County Historical Society. March has been designated as National Women’s History Month and we celebrate it with Edna’s story on the hundredth anniversary of her death.

Edna was the great granddaughter of Col. John Odell, George Washington’s guide during the Revolutionary War and grew up in the famous house that served as Le Comte de Rochambeau’s Headquarters for 6 weeks in 1781. Edna followed the path of her family’s service to our country and volunteered to serve in France during WWI. She became a nurse and served with the American Red Cross in France in WWI, caring for orphans of the war.

The three authors are honored to write this article. Tessa Payer is an emerging museum professional who graduated from William and Mary in May 2020. She lives in New Jersey and runs a podcast, Works Not Cited. Susan Werbe retired as a VP of Programming & Development, History Channel, after a successful career as a producer of television news and documentary programming. Susan Seal is the President and Founder of The Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters. A retired real estate professional, she is the former President of the Board of Trustees of the Westchester County Historical Society. Both Susans live in Hartsdale, within walking distance of Odell House.
