Last week, the Yonkers Police Department demonstrated their heroism and kept the community safe without a single shot being fired! Darren Smith, an armed 24 year old man from New Rochelle, fired several shots at Yonkers police officers in broad daylight while police chased him on foot in an effort to apprehend him. This all happened in Getty Square in the middle of the afternoon, which we all know is one of the busiest hubs in Yonkers, full of people at any given hour of the day. The outcome could have potentially been very tragic. Thankfully, the Yonkers police officers were able to detain him without the use of firearms and without any innocent bystanders getting hurt.
This incident is truly a testament to the capabilities of Yonkers Finest. This shows the police are capable of keeping the community safe without resorting to excessive force, and that the use of firearms is not always necessary. Thank you to the Yonkers police officers for your act of bravery and your commitment to keeping Yonkers safe. Keep up the great work.
*********Legislative & Codes Meeting**********
The Legislation & Codes Committee meeting of the Yonkers City Council that had originally been called for Tuesday, September 29th at 5:00PM has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 6th at 5:00PM.
Also, as a friendly reminder, City Council meetings will continue to be held virtually for the time being. Tune in via the City Council Facebook page, City Hall TV (accessible via the City of Yonkers website), Optimum channel 78, or Verizon Fios channel 39. We will resume in-person meetings when we deem it safe to do so.
