FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: YONKERS MAYOR MIKE SPANO ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING LOCAL PROTESTS AND THE TRAGIC DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD.
YONKERS, NY – MAY 31, 2020 -- Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today issued the following statement about the tragic death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd and the need to protest peacefully. Local Yonkers residents will March for Justice at 2PM today, starting at Yonkers City Hall:
“The emotions running deep throughout my body are similar to those of our entire city. The tragedy of George Floyd creates a heaviness in my heart and anger within — emotions that cannot be undone.
What can be done is choosing how we respond. To truly create change, we must work toward achieving better understanding, educate ourselves, and vote — our country’s future depends on it.
Over the last 24 hours, I’ve met with local Yonkers community and church leaders resulting in a fruitful conversation about the need to come together as one city, one community and one purpose to fight for justice and peace.
For these reasons, I will be participating in a peaceful protest today alongside our residents and community leaders looking to exercise their first amendment right. I urge attendees to gather in memory of George and not lose focus of our message of unity and nonviolence.”
