Dear Friends,
This week, my family and I traveled to the State Capitol in Albany for a very special day. The New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate, both approved resolutions that honored the life and passing of my father, Leonard N. Spano.
He was remembered for his work ethic, devotion to his family and keen political instincts.
On behalf of my entire family, I would like to thank Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, State Senator Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Dr. Nader Sayegh and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow and for honoring my father's life and accomplishments on the grandest of stages.
It was a proud and special moment for our family that we will never forget, especially my mother.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend Yonkers, and be sure to tell your loved ones how much you love them.

The inspections are required to ensure proper fire protection. You may experience cloudy or discolored water and fluctuations in water pressure. If cloudy or discolored water occurs, please run the cold water until the water runs clear. The discoloration represents no health hazard. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you check the water before using it for things such as cooking, drinking, and washing clothes. Yonkers Arts Weekend 2019
|
Mayor Mike Spano and local leaders this week gathered with local artists at the Carpets Mills Arts District to officially kick off this weekend's 6th Annual Yonkers Arts Weekend with an unveiling of a mural by WE ART 1. Founders Jose Gonzalez, Patricia Santos and Nancy Mendez founded WE ART 1, a collective of artists based of Yonkers, right in the the YOHO Studios in the Carpet Mills Arts District.
Since its inception in 2014, YAW has created a prominent arts district in the City of Yonkers, several city galleries have opened, and dozens of local and international renowned muralists and artists have contributed to the City's downtown revival under the leadership of Mayor Mike Spano. YAW attracts more than 10,000 visitors a year to city galleries, the Carpet Mills Arts District, Hudson River Museum, and Untermeyer Gardens.

Yonkers Students Honor Vets
|

In conjunction with the Office of Veterans Services, Mayor Mike Spano announced the winners of this year's Veterans Essay Contest. Over 300 Yonkers students submitted essays on what a Yonkers Veterans Memorial means to them. The top 4 winners received a City Hall Certificate and enjoyed a pizza lunch with Mayor Mike Spano. In addition, the four winners received a brand new IPad, courtesy of donations from local Yonkers Veterans.
Congratulations to Bethany Garcia, Anthony Egiziaco, Dallas Galinski and Prizila Negrete!

This week was National Police Week; a week to commemorate the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the communities they served and a time to honor law enforcement nationally. While one crime is one too many, we've seen a 43% decrease in crime since 2011 thanks to the Yonkers Police Department which continues to go above & beyond to not only ensure the overall safety of the community, but to strengthen their ties with Yonkers residents. In recognition of National Police Week, we thank all of the residents who attended local events to meet local officers as we honored our local heroes.

The 6 th annual Yonkers Arts Weekend takes place this weekend as thousands of visitors will travel to the City of Yonkers to enjoy its vibrant art scene. The Carpets Mill Arts District at 540 Nepperhan Avenue will be one of the key locations that attract visitors this weekend. But did you know... that this location became one of the most desirable artist locations in Westchester County over 30 years ago?
The cavernous collection of buildings that once housed the former Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company Mills found new life in the mid-1980s when sculptor Debra Sherwood turned fifth story lofts into YoHo Studios. Today, the popular art collective incorporates dozens of painters, sculptors, photographers and other creatively-inclined businesses.
