Update from Yonkers City Council President, Mike Khader.

Message From Mike
Dear Neighbor,

This week the City Council finished our third, and busiest, week of budget hearings to date for the 2019-2020 City Budget. The Council heard from the following departments:
  • Engineering & Traffic Engineering - $3,168,834 (Mayor’s Proposal)
  • Capital Budgets - $138,477,017 (Mayor’s Proposal)
  • Yonkers Public Schools’ Central Office and Personnel - $645,267,916 (BOE’s  Proposal)
  • The Hudson River Museum - $275,000 (Mayor’s Proposal)
  • Corporation Counsel and the Inspector General - $706,524 (Mayor’s Proposal)
  • The Department of Public Works - $88,764,187 (Mayor’s Proposal)
  • Finance and the Office of Budget Management - $16,931,490 (Mayor’s Proposal)

Like our previous budget hearings, I haven’t shied away from asking the hard questions, such as finding out what the city is currently doing about our wide-spread rodent problem or finding out about the earmarking of funds for school psychologists or social workers.

As I’ve said, oversight is one of the council’s most important responsibilities. These budget hearings are one of the few times I, and the other Council Members, are afforded unrestricted access to the department heads and I plan on making the most of the time we have left to ensure that dollars are being spent responsibly and can be explained to our taxpayers. I became City Council President in order to make City Hall more accessible and improving the quality of life in our city and our schools, and I plan on continuing to do that to the best of my ability.

Next week is our fourth and final week of budget hearings. I was disappointed by the small turnout at this week’s public hearing at Saunders – regardless of where you live, this budget affects all of us – so take some time and join us for and our 2nd and final public hearing at City Hall on Monday, May 20th at 7:00 PM for your chance to voice your thoughts and concerns about the Mayor’s proposed budget to the City Council. I hope to see everyone next week and look forward to hearing your feedback.

As always, feel free to reach out to my office with any suggestions or concerns about how we can help to improve the quality of life of those who call Yonkers home. My office can be reached at 914-377-6060 or by sending us an email at councilpresident@yonkersny.gov
