Friends,
Police Week
The week of May 12 to May 18, 2019, marks the official Annual Police Week. While we are should always be appreciative of law enforcement officers who keep us safe, this week we honored them with many different events throughout our City.
I am especially honored that two of my children, Sergeant Megan Breen and Police Office Patrick Breen, are among Yonkers Finest, the best Police Department in the Country!
Legislation
I am proud to co-sponsor legislation urging the New York State Senate and Assembly to reject bills before them known as the "Elder Parole Bill". If passed by New York State, this would automatically create an opportunity for parole for inmates who are over 55 years old and who have served a minimum of 15 years of their sentence. These cases should be reviewed on a case by case basis and not with blanket legislation. I really don't want to see serial killer David Berkowitz returning to Yonkers as a free man.
Yonkers Arts Weekend
Yonkers Arts Weekend is a great family friendly event and I look forward to seeing you there! The weekend features hundreds of local, regional and international artists, painters, photographers, performing artists and sculptors in four of the City's most exciting cultural hotspots: the Downtown Yonkers Waterfront District, the Carpet Mills Arts District ("CMAD"), Untermyer Gardens and the Hudson River Museum. Since its inception in 2014, YAW has created a prominent arts district in the City of Yonkers, several city galleries have opened, and dozens of local and international renowned muralists and artists have contributed to the City's downtown revival under the leadership of Mayor Mike Spano. YAW attracts more than 10,000 visitors a year to city galleries, the Carpet Mills Arts District, Hudson River Museum, and Untermeyer Gardens.

Honor Flight
Last week we welcomed three Korean War Veterans and one WWII Veteran to Yonkers City Hall to present distinguished service medals and certificates honoring their service, sacrifice and bravery. The group participated in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight, an all-expense paid day-long trip to the Washington, D.C. memorials.
The Hudson Valley Honor Flight occurs several times a year from Westchester County Airport and is a local hub of the National Honor Flight Network. Hudson Valley Honor Flight (HVHF) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that transports Veterans to visit their Washington, D.C. memorials at no cost to them.
This is a well deserved honor for these heroes.
Bicycle Sundays
The Bronx River Parkway will be closed between 10AM & 2PM from the Westchester County Center south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, allowing bicyclists, skaters, joggers and walkers to cruise over 6.5 miles of the parkway without worrying about car traffic. Bicycle Sundays will take place on the following dates: May 19 June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Sept 8, 15, 22, 29
Please be safe and I'll see you on the bike path!

Water & Sewer Line Protection
Many City residents are unaware that they are responsible for the water and sewer lines from their home to the main in the street. Unfortunately, they usually become aware when there is an issue that requires repair and often at a very significant expense. That is why the City of Yonkers selected American Water Resources as the official provider of the Water and Sewer Service Line Protection Program. You may participate in Water Line Protection only, Sewer Line Protection only or both. While these programs are voluntary I recommend you visit the dedicated American Water Resources City of Yonkers website or call them at (866) 315-4473 to learn more about these programs and the benefits of enrolling.
Upcoming Events
Very Sincerely,
|
