MAYOR MIKE SPANO ANNOUNCES FREE COMPOST DISTRIBUTION FOR YONKERS RESIDENTS.

 

Free Compost Created From More Than 30 tons of Recycled Food Scraps From Yonkers Residents.

 

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano along with the Yonkers Department of Public Works will announce free compost distribution for Yonkers residents at the Yonkers Recycling Center, 735 Saw Mill River Road, Thursday, May 9 at 2:30 PM.

 

The compost is a product of the City of Yonkers Department of Public Works residential food scrap recycling program, which collected more than 30 tons of food scraps. Eligible residents will receive one, 3-5 lb. bag of compost per household. Proof of residency is required. Starting May 9, compost bags will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last, Mondays – Fridays, 9:00AM – 3:00PM at the Yonkers Recycling Center.

 

In April 2022, the City of Yonkers became the largest municipality to join Westchester’s Residential Food Scrap Transportation and Disposal (RFSTAD) program. Since then, there has been a reduction of approximately 571 tons in the City’s solid waste stream.

 

Diverting food scraps lowers the City’s solid waste disposal costs, reduces household waste, and minimizes the amount of waste transferred for incineration to the Westchester County Department of Environment Facilities.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will present his School Spotlight Award for May 2024 to the deserving teachers, staff and students of Yonkers Middle High School on Thursday, May 9, at 10:00AM, at Yonkers Middle High School (Arena), at 150 Rockland Avenue, Yonkers, NY.

 

Yonkers Middle High School is being recognized for its distinguished ranking in the U.S. News and World Report, the successful establishment of a My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) chapter, and a commendable record of college acceptances.

 

Mayor Spano’s School Spotlight Award highlights four Yonkers Public Schools within the academic school year for their significant academic success, extracurricular achievements and community involvement.

Lansdowne Yonkers, Yonkers’ semi-professional soccer team, sits in first place and are 3 points, effectively 1 win, from winning the Eastern Premier Soccer League (EPSL) Metropolitan Conference title. They face Manhattan Celtic at Tibbetts Brook Park at 8 PM, and if they win the game, they get to lift the Metropolitan Conference trophy in front of the home fans. Lansdowne made this scenario possible by restarting a new winning streak, in which they defeated Hoboken FC, Central Park Rangers, and their title rivals NY Pancyprian Freedoms to move back into first with 51 pts and a record of 16 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss.

              It’s not going to be an easy match. Manhattan Celtic happens to be the former club of Lansdowne Yonkers head coach Matt Kane. The Belfast native made the blockbuster switch to Yonkers in the summer of 2023 after nearly leading Manhattan into the EPSL playoffs for the first time at the end of the 2022-23 season. Lansdowne Yonkers’ recruited Kane to rebuild their first team and create a new culture among the bhoys, who hadn’t advanced past the first round of EPSL playoffs since winning everything in 2021. The move created an atmosphere of mixed feelings among the Celtic players, and it’s likely the case that they will throw the kitchen sink at Lansdowne to prevent them from clinching the title on Saturday. It’s possible that Lansdowne will have already clinched the title by the time they face Celtic, but it’s unlikely. Yonkers’ title rival, the 2^nd place NY Pancyprian Freedoms, face SC Vistula Garfield on Wednesday night, and if they lose, then Lansdowne will be declared champions. The Pancyprians have kept a very tight race with Lansdowne Yonkers, and it took their recent matchup on May 2^nd to give Lansdowne the scenario to win this Saturday.

The Pancyprians, who have battled with Yonkers for supremacy in local pre-professional soccer for the better half of the last decade, traveled up to Yonkers on Thursday May 2^nd, for what is believed to be the effective title deciding match. In front of a crowd of over 100, Lansdowne Yonkers put on a thrilling display of soccer. The “Bhoys” had only one regular season win against the Pancyprians in their previous 6 matchups, but it was newcomer Liam Salmon, who headed in the first goal that caused the young children and fans to explode in excitement. The Pancyprians quickly equalized, and the match turned into a massive game of chess. Yonkers restored their lead in the beginning of the 2^nd half; as a result, they began to break down the Pancyprians’ lethal wingers who were creating the main attacking threats. When Lansdowne scored the 3^rd goal, the youth players who aspire to be like their first team counterparts ran onto the field and celebrated with Liam Walsh, who slid to slot the insurance goal into the net.

Saturday is Lansdowne Yonkers’ last regular season home game. If they don’t win the conference title on Saturday, they can still win it on the road on May 18^th when they travel to Garfield, NJ and face SC Vistula. Ideally, the bhoys would love to just win it in front of their home fans. They last won the Metropolitan Conference at St. John’s University in 2021 and celebrated by bringing the trophy to The Heritage on McLean Avenue. To have the entire party at Tibbetts Brook Park would be a lot more convenient. Attendance is free, kick off is at 8 PM, and if you cannot be there in person, the match will be livestreamed on New Logical Sports.

CITY OF YONKERS TO CELEBRATE FIRST PUBLIC MURAL INSTALLATION AT JFK MARINA.

 

Mayor Mike Spano along with City’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation and the Westchester Mural Group (through Yonkers Arts) will celebrate its first public mural installation on Wednesday, May 8, at 4:30PM at the JFK Marina in Yonkers.  The mural, with its aquatic theme, reflects the marina’s location in proximity to the Hudson River.

 

The new mural joins dozens of public art pieces displayed through the City of Yonkers and contributes to the city’s burgeoning arts scene.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: YONKERS MAYOR SPANO APPOINTS DECORATED RETIRED YONKERS POLICE OFFICER TO YONKERS BOARD OF EDUCATION.

22-Year Veteran of the Yonkers Police Department Felix Rios Sworn in Today.

YONKERS, NY – May 7, 2024 – Mayor Mike Spano today swore in retired Yonkers Police Officer Felix Rios to the Yonkers Board of Education. As trustee of the Yonkers Board of Education, Rios is part of a nine-member Board, which is the official policy making body of the School District. 

“As we continue to provide our students with the best education possible, I am proud to appoint Felix to the Board of Education as he brings unique perspectives as a parent, an alumnus and dedicated public servant. Felix is a decorated law enforcement officer who is passionate about education in Yonkers, and his experiences will be valuable assets to our District and our students,” said Mayor Spano.

 

Working in law enforcement for over 20 years, Rios served as a patrol officer and member of the Yonkers Police Department’s Anti-Crime and Traffic Units. During his tenure with Yonkers Police, Rios was the recipient of five law enforcement commendations, six certificates of excellent police work, eight unit citations, the Yonkers PBA Harold Woods Award and numerous letters of appreciation. Rios recently served as a board member of the Yonkers Parking Authority. Raised in Yonkers, Rios is a Yonkers Public Schools alumna and parent of two current Yonkers Public Schools students.

 

“I am very proud to be appointed by Mayor Mike Spano. I look forward to working with the Yonkers Board of Education in continuing the quality education that is available to our Yonkers community,” commented Felix Rios.

 

Board of Education Vice President Dr. Rosalba Corrado Del Vecchio noted, “I am delighted to have Felix Rios join us on the Yonkers Board of Education. His extensive background in public safety and his deep roots in our community are invaluable assets that will greatly enhance our board’s capabilities. Felix’s commitment to the well-being and education of our students is clear, and I am excited to collaborate with him to continue advancing the high standards of education that our district is known for."

Rios will serve the remainder of a five-year expired term through 2028, held by Rev. Steve Lopez, former Yonkers Board of Education President.

We are in a state of crisis never-before-seen in the world of reproductive health care here in the United States.

The situation has become so dire that a 6-week abortion ban no longer shocks — and the US Supreme Court just heard a case deciding whether the life of a pregnant woman is more or less important than a fetus. Can a doctor perform an emergency abortion when a woman is dying in the ER if the state law outlaws abortion?

We need Reproductive Rights LEADERS.

George Latimer is the Leader we need In CD 16.

There are two candidates rated Pro-Choice but only George Latimer is endorsed by ProChoice Voter.   Throughout his career, Latimer has been an outspoken advocate for women’s reproductive rights. He co-sponsored the Reproductive Health Act and the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act while in the NYS Senate and the Assembly. He has supported pay equity, safe access to healthcare clinics, comprehensive sexuality education, and paid family leave. Now as Westchester County Executive, George Latimer has taken on the mantel of leadership. He has taken it beyond “a vote”, making abortion access key to his governance. Since 2017 when he first ran against right-to-life endorsed, anti-choice zealot Rob Astorino, Latimer has spoken out on ensuring safe access to comprehensive reproductive health care. After the invasion of All Women’s Health in White Plains, the Westchester County Board of Legislators, with Latimer’s support, passed our Reproductive Health Care Facilities Access Act — the first law of its kind anywhere in the nation, protecting both access and services. George Latimer signed it into law the very weekend Roe v. Wade was overturned. Going a step further, Latimer is ensuring that Westchester’s police officers know the laws they are called to enforce when protecting reproductive healthcare facilities.
