Yonkers to Become Largest City in New York to Launch a Community Choice Aggregation Program that Secures a Fixed-Rate Clean Energy Supply.
YONKERS, NY – January 5, 2022 -- Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the launch of the Westchester Power Community Choice Aggregation program in Yonkers, known as Westchester Power, which will provide 50,000 Yonkers households with locally sourced 100% renewable energy using hydropower beginning March 1, 2022. Starting the second week in January, eligible Yonkers residents will receive notification letters from the program administrator, Sustainable Westchester, with details of the program, energy rates and steps on how to take action on enrollment.
“Sustainability long has been one of the pillars of my Administration,” said Mayor Spano. “The launch of the Westchester Power program in Yonkers provides residents with the power to choose a clean, renewable energy supply while protecting residents from unexpected utility rate hikes and ensuring the best clean energy rates possible. With our enrollment, Yonkers now becomes the largest city in New York State to participate in a Community Choice Aggregation program and the largest municipal member of Westchester Power. I encourage our residents to learn more about this innovative and smart program that will provide for a healthier, greener Yonkers.”
Through the Westchester Power program, Yonkers will offset an estimated 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide – equivalent to 16,000 cars taken off the road for one year. After conducting educational outreach and approval by New York State’s Department of Public Service in the last year, Sustainable Westchester and Yonkers have secured a competitive fixed rate to provide Yonkers residents with 100% New York State renewable energy. The program applies only to those who receive their energy supply from Con Edison and will not apply to those already enrolled in an energy program with an Energy Service Company (ESCO). Delivery of energy, billing and support will continue to be provided by Con Edison. Yonkers residents and businesses can OPT OUT of the program at any time.
Westchester Power currently serves 115,000 residents in 28 Westchester municipalities who have come together to address climate change through their electricity choice. Sustainable Westchester is a nonprofit, consortium of Westchester County local governments that facilitates effective collaboration on sustainability initiatives.
Eligible Yonkers residents can opt out of the program at AT ANY TIME without any penalty.
