Roscas are a traditional Mexican bread (pan dulce) in the shape of a ring (or also the crown), that represents the three wise men's search for the king of the Jews. This tradition is based on religious origins. Lately, we just eat the Rosca for pleasure and fun. The tradition of eating Rosca de Reyes, came from France, "Le Gallete de Rois," which is celebrated on January 6th for Le Jour de La Epiphanie, Kings Day or Día de Reyes.
Rosca de Reyes is celebrated in the Mexican culture on January 6th, where people hold gatherings for family and friends, to participate in the cutting of the Rosca de Reyes bread. Inside the Rosca, there are three different objects hidden, including: beans, plastic figures (often a plastic baby), and fava beans. These objects are supposed to represent the three wise men but also, there's a responsibility if you find any of these in your Rosca slice. If you find the bean, you are expected to make or buy champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate), if you get the fava bean, you have to bring tamales for everyone participating. Last, if you get the plastic figure, it means its good luck for you, and you have to play music. All of this is celebrated on Dia de la Candelaria which falls on February 2nd.
