Westchester Insider: Westchester County Legislator Margaret Cunzio 3rd District: Are You Behind on Your Rent? Help Is Available Now.

 

The New York Emergency Rental Assistance Program offers direct payments to landlords for eligible renters who owe back rent. It can also provide help with gas utility payments for those who qualify because of COVID-19-related financial impacts.

• You may be eligible for up to 12 months of rental arrears payments for rents accrued on or after 3/13/2020.
• You may be eligible for up to 12 months of electric or gas utility arrears payments for arrears that have accrued on or after 3/13/2020.
• You may be eligible for up to 3 months of additional rental assistance if your household is expected to spend 30% or more of your gross monthly income to pay for rent.

If you are a Westchester resident outside of Yonkers, there are 13 nonprofits who can help you apply for the rent relief you need. Yonkers is administering the program for city residents, with four nonprofits at the ready.

Today I was happy to come out once again and join everyone in this years ALS Ice Bucket Challenge at Empire City Casino. I have been apart of this every year since 2015 and I will always be here until we find a cure against this horrible disease. This disease will be defeated one day and until then we will remember our friends such as Pat Quinn, John Jonm, and many others who have fought hard. Every August until a cure and that is something we will follow through with!

Greenburgh Insider: Students form landscaping angels to help elderly and disabled.

 

Volunteer landscaping angels is a new program designed to provide help to seniors and disabled residents unable to afford landscaping services.

Greenburgh has had a snow angel program for 30 years -helping seniors clear snow from driveways. We have a TV angels program- volunteers remove old TVs from seniors homes and bring them to the highway garage. The Covid Angels helped seniors get vaccinated.

Now-- a new angels program has been started by students: the Landscaping Angels.

Fabio Scarselli and Jackson Tavel are kickstarting the Landscaping Angels. Fabio Scarselli attends Franklin & Marshall and is going into his junior year. He has been involved in the Greenburgh summer internship program this year. During the peak of the pandemic, Fabio and his brother decided to clear some overgrowth in their grandmother’s yard. Stemming from an incentive to limit the number of people their grandmother was in contact with, Fabio asked himself why there wasn’t a volunteer program in Greenburgh to help out community members like his grandmother? Alongside Jackson Tavel, the Landscaping Angels were created. Jackson Tavel is a rising senior at Edgemont Jr/Sr high school. He has volunteered for the Greenburgh snow angels program in recent years. He plans to gather a network of volunteers that can be deployed to do various tasks and projects for senior citizens and disabled individuals. The Landscaping Angels can assist you with your yard work needs. Some examples of projects that we can assist you with are: 

• Weeding
• Planting 
• Watering
• Raking leaves
• Removing dead branches

To qualify for assistance, you must be a senior citizen or unable to perform physical tasks with ease. If you, or someone you know, can benefit from an Angel’s help, please fill out this form or email angelsofgreenburghny@gmail.com. We will get back in touch with you within 48 hours. Once we confirm what your needs are, your name will be added to our database, and you can reach out for help from an Angel year round!

We are so lucky to have an amazing group of students and young people living in our community like Fabio and Jackson who want to make life better for seniors and the disabled population. Their efforts will ease stress among those who can't afford landscaping services and will enhance the quality of life of neighbors.

(White Plains, NY) Over the past four years, Westchester County has experienced a decrease in major crimes.  Contrary to some other jurisdictions, Westchester results have been praised by Westchester County Executive George Latimer.  Latimer, crediting the County Police Department and local police departments with a more proactive approach to preventing crime and collaborative policing strategies. 

 

2017 to 2020

• Index Crimes, 11% decrease
• Violent Crimes, 18.8 % decrease
• Property Crimes, 9.4% decrease
• Violent Crimes with Firearms, 22.3 % decrease
• Weapons Secured,  370% increase

 

Latimer said: “I commend the work of our brave men and women in making the streets of Westchester County safer than four years ago.  Fighting crime is sometimes with a heavy hand, and sometimes it’s making more proactive and inclusive choices.  Proactive and inclusive choices – which are hallmarks of my administration- are what we are seeing here today. All the law enforcement in this County is working to make Westchester safe and I am glad to say today that we are seeing the results of their hard work.”

Westchester County Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sheriff Thomas Gleason said: “I want to thank County Executive Latimer for his support of our brave men and women and his support of our approach to policing.  Law enforcement is part of the community and it is only when we work together that we can succeed.” 

Latimer said: “We cannot predict the future, but we are committed to monitoring crime statistics and providing resources where and when they might be needed.”

The decrease in crime statistics come from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and Westchester County Department of Public Safety.

Westchester County Department of Public Safety Deputy Commissioner Undersheriff Terrance Raynor said: “As the supervisor of this division it gives me great pride to know that we have made the streets of Westchester County safer.  No one wants illegal guns floating around and falling into the wrong hands.  I thank County Executive Latimer for his support in this important work.”

In order to keep legally possessed firearms from becoming illegal, a proactive measure employed by the Pistol License Unit, is to monitor pistol license expiration dates.  Each time a license is not renewed prior to the expiration date, the permit holder is notified of their permit lapse and directed to surrender their firearms. In these cases the firearm can be secured at the applicant’s local police department or brought to the Westchester Department of Public Safety.  In cases where the permit holder may be disabled or has passed away, members of the unit may ask a responsible family member to secure the firearm and turn it over to local law enforcement for safekeeping.  These actions help to keep firearms from becoming abandoned, lost or placed into the hands of unlicensed civilians.

The unit also works closely with the County Attorney’s office when serving court orders upon firearm license holders, seizing and securing firearms pursuant to such orders.
