GLEN ISLAND BEACH AND THE ENTIRE PARK TO REOPEN TO PUBLIC.

 

BEACH TO OPEN SATURDAY, JULY 3.

 

 

(New Rochelle, New York) – Glen Island Beach and the entire Glen Island Park are set to reopen Saturday, July 3, 10 a.m. after being closed to the public over year.  The Park was utilized as a COVID-19 drive-thru testing site since March 2020. 

 Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “This is another sign that we are winning the war against COVID-19.  It was here in New Rochelle that the first case of COVID-19 in the Westchester was detected, at the time the drive-through testing was what we needed but now what we need is for our residents to have their park back.  I am thrilled that Glen Island will be open for the summer.  I’m thrilled that families will once again enjoy the cool breeze off the sound and that kids will splash in the water.”

 Westchester County Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor said: “We are so excited to reopen Glen Island in time for residents to enjoy it during the summer months. I’m proud of the staff for all of the hard work put into getting Glen Island back into shape.”

 The beach will be open daily from Saturday, July 3 through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the last entry at 6 p.m. Westchester County residency required for admission with either County Park Pass or a valid New York State driver's license with a Westchester county address.

 Parking is $5 with Park Pass, $10 without Park Pass, daily through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, then weekends only.

SBA Announces Extension of $100 Million Grant ‘Community Navigator Pilot’ Program Proposals to July 23, 2021.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has extended the application date for its new Community Navigator Pilot Program.

SBA will now accept proposal submissions through July 23, 2021 and anticipates making award decisions by September 2021.

This new initiative, established by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, will leverage a community navigator approach to reach the nation’s smallest businesses, with a priority focus on those owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals, as well as women and veterans.

The Community Navigator Program will have a significant impact in revitalizing small businesses through a Hub and Spoke “Navigator” featuring a lead “Hub” – at the center of a network of “Spoke” organizations that deploy trusted community advocates to work with small businesses during recovery.

These networks leverage the business development expertise of the central hub organization and the community credibility of spoke organizations to better connect critical resources with small businesses, with the priority focus on those owned by women, veterans, and socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.

Competitive grant awards will range from $1 million to $5 million for a two-year performance period. Applicants have until July 23, 2021 to submit their applications at grants.gov.  Eligible applicants are County governments; Native American tribal governments; Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status; City or township governments; State governments; as well as Economic Development Organization or Similar Organization, SBA Resource Partners, Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), Women’s Business Centers, SCORE, Veterans Business Outreach Centers (VBOCs), Community Development Financial Institutions, and Nonprofit Colleges and Universities.

Performance periods are projected to commence in September 2021. Those eligible to apply must meet and demonstrate abilities to support requirements of this funding opportunity.

MOUNT VERNON MAN ARRAIGNED ON MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE IN SHOOTING DEATH OF SLEEPY HOLLOW RESIDENT.

 White Plains, NY -- A Mount Vernon man was arraigned June 30 on a charge of Manslaughter in the First Degree for the for the June 28 killing of a Sleepy Hollow man, Westchester District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced.

 Emmanuel Valentin Perez, 18, appeared in Sleepy Hollow Village Court where he was charged with the shooting death of 32-year-old Manuel Salazar. During the incident, which took place in Margotta Courts Park in Sleepy Hollow, another man also sustained a gunshot wound.

 Salazar was taken to Westchester County Medical Center, where he died. The second victim was treated and released. Valentin Perez was arrested on June 29 and remains in custody at the Westchester County Jail.

 “We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Salazar’s family, and we have already reached out to them to offer victim support services,” said DA Rocah. “We share Westchester residents’ concerns about gun violence and will continue to fight this problem aggressively.”

 DA Rocah also thanked the law enforcement officers who were involved in this case, including Sleepy Hollow Police Department, Westchester County Police and the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force.

 The case is being prosecuted by Major Case Bureau Chief Perry Perrone.

 The charges against the defendant represent accusations and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

 

Greenburgh Insider: A new farmers market starting at Greenburgh Town Hall August 5.

Greenburgh Town Hall will be the location for our newest farmers market every Thursday beginning August 5th. Something to look forward to. A big thank you to the Town Board for approving the market. And, to Town Clerk Judith Beville for her efforts.

I am very pleased to report that the Greenburgh Town Board unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday evening authorizing a farmers market to operate at the parking lot of Greenburgh Town Hall every Thursday beginning August 5th through October 28 from 2 PM to 6:30 PM. 

Greenburgh was the first community in Westchester to have a farmers market (on East Hartsdale near the Hartsdale train station). That market began almost 30 years ago. Since we started the market - farmers markets have opened up all over Westchester. People love the fresh produce, entertainment and the chance to socialize with others. The E Hartsdale Ave farmers market will continue. This new market will be enjoyed by residents and employees of the town.

Earlier this spring I reached out to practically every farmer I could think of asking if they would be interested in starting a farmers market at Town Hall. Joseph Katona responded --he has expertise in managing farmers markets. Judith Beville, Town Clerk, has been chairing the committee overseeing the implementation of this initiative.

After Pause Due to COVID-19, County Executive George Latimer Resumes “Wrong Way Task Force” to Examine Entrance & Exit Ramps On Bronx River Parkway.

 

(White Plains, NY) – After a pause due to COVID-19, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is restarting a Traffic Safety Task Force, made up of citizens and elected officials, to review all entrance and exit ramps on the Bronx River Parkway. This review is meant to take inventory of potential problem zones in light of ‘wrong-way driver’ incidents, notably following a ‘wrong-way driver’ incident that took place in Harrison among numerous other instances.

 

As first proposed, this pilot Task Force will consist of members of the Board of Legislators, New York State elected officials, members of the Latimer Administration and citizen-commuters. Latimer has charged Department of Environmental Facilities Deputy Commissioner Erin O’Shea to Chair the Task Force.

 

The purpose of this Task Force is to identify potential immediate ‘common sense’ remedies, like new signage, and act quickly on the recommendations.

 

In a letter to the committee Latimer said: “In early 2020, our County Administration created a Task Force to assess the conditions on the Bronx River Parkway (owned and maintained by Westchester County) and to recommend improvements that would reduce the potential incidents of Wrong Way Driving. Elements such as entrances and exits, signage, traffic lights, and other items that direct drivers should be reviewed by your task force, and a final report of recommendations for improvements submitted for our review.”

 

At the time of its creation, DPW/T Commissioner Hugh J. Greechan said: “The Latimer Administration is committed to working with all stakeholders to find solutions. Our Department took immediate action to review the particular intersection in Harrison in the short term and we look forward to working with this citizen task force in the long term.”
