Dear Friends and Neighbors,   Today we celebrate the Dominican and Haitian mothers and express our heartfelt gratitude for everything they do in our lives, in our families and in our communities.     I want to give a special thanks to my mother for everything she imparted in me and for being a great role model for her daughters and sons. While we should always congratulate our mothers and tell them how much we love them, I want to take this opportunity to ask that we renew our commitment to give mothers the respect, support, and equality they deserve every day of the year by making sure they get equal pay, affordable child care, good health care, and recognition for the important role they play in our society at large.   Happy Mother's Day To All Dominican & Haitian Mothers celebrating today!

YOU CAN WATCH ABOUT 150 HALF HOUR INTERVIEWS WITH GREENBURGH  VETERANS NON STOP ON PUBLIC ACCESS TV OR BY CLICKING ON TO OUR LIVING HISTORY LINK  (many of the veterans have sadly passed)

Every Memorial day weekend from Friday to Tuesday morning the town rebroadcasts on public access TV interviews conducted with approximately 150 veterans non stop on optimum channel 76 and Verizon channel 35.  Sadly, many of the local heroes who participated in the interviews (most of the heroes fought in World War II or the Korean conflict)  over the past dozen years have passed away. It's our hope that students and members of the community will appreciate the significant role our local veterans played in participating in our democracy. 

Each of the approximately 150 living history stories of Greenburgh veterans is about a half hour long. You can also watch the interviews by clicking on to the greenburgh public access channel

Line up at 10 AM  Desanti Plaza  Veterans Memorial (across from Hartsdale train station)

Ceremony begins at 10:30 AM at the Memorial

Motorcade continues with stops at the 9-11 Memorial on Central Ave and continues to the Greenburgh Police HQ and the Fairview Fire Department. Because of COVID-19 concerns our veterans committee and fire departments decided to have a motorcade rather than a parade this year.  A big thank you to our hard working and very dedicated Veterans Committee for all they do for our veterans.

After a harsh winter, the City of Yonkers has filled over 3,000 potholes in over 70 different areas in two months.

DPW crews are out every day addressing reported areas, but your help is needed. If you see a pothole, report it to the Mayor's Helpline at (914) 377-HELP.

I’m so excited for all the plans CSEE has in store for when they move into their new building, including culinary art options, auto mechanic training facilities, and more! I made sure to remind the students to always pursue their dreams, keep pushing forward, and keep their eyes on the prize!

I was happy and honored to visit Empress Emergency Medical Services to thank our EMS workers for all of their hard work. In honor of EMS week, the Yonkers City Hall Clock tower was lit maroon and gold to pay homage to the EMS workers who help save our lives every single day.

Dear Friend, 

The City of Yonkers 2021-2022 Budget was adopted today with a 7-0 vote by the Yonkers City Council.

The Adopted Budget contains no increase in property taxes and contains no reductions in City services or positions.

The Adopted Budget also increases the School District’s budget, making it the largest local share of any big city to a district outside of New York City.

Over 53% of the Adopted Budget is devoted to the Yonkers Public Schools, the highest percentage contribution made during my administration.

By working together with our City Council, we are maintaining quality services for our residents, relieving our taxpayers, and making vital investments in education so we can keep moving Yonkers forward.

I am happy to announce our next Community Clean-Up, which will be taking place on June 5th, from 11am to 1pm in the South Broadway business district. I am excited to partner with the South Broadway BID to clean up South Broadway, from Park Hill Avenue to Caryl Avenue. This will be the second community clean up that my office is co-sponsoring in the past few weeks. Yonkers Insider: Yonkers City Council: Yonkers Budget Approval! - May 28, 2021 By Yonkers City Council Majority Leader Corazon Pineda Issac 2nd District.

 

The City of Yonkers Fiscal Year 2021-2022 Budget was adopted with a 7-0 vote today, by the Yonkers City Council. This year's budget is a $1.25 billion budget, which saw an increase in the allocated funds for the Yonkers Public School District, including: Key highlights  $12 million increase to the Yonkers Board of Education  $2 million for which I personally advocated, to restore the much needed Junior Varsity Sports, for our high school student-athletes 22 additional Music and Arts Positions  7 additional Librarians  8 Physical Education Positions 8 Career and Tech Education Positions 5 Foreign Language Instructors 53 School Counselors, Social Workers and Psychologists  Additional Nurses  I advocated for funding to support the Montefiore Nurse Family Program which supports young mothers and provides at home visits from baby birth until the age of two.  I also advocated for the allocation of money which allows us to get 300 families off of the Section 8 vouchers waiting list and provide more people with housing.  Furthermore, the City of Yonkers Fiscal Year 2022 Adopted Budget included a reduction in Property Tax Levy, which ultimately amounted to a 0% tax rate increase. There were also ​no reductions in City services or positions.  In regards to Capital Improvements, the City of Yonkers Budget allocated: $10 million Downtown Waterfront Park  Millions of dollars for General Park Improvements  Bonding for Apparatus that help our emergency service responders further protect residents  Millions of dollars for Infrastructure Investments  Thank you to Mayor Mike Spano, as well as the other members of the Yonkers City Council for doing their best to create a fair and progressive City of Yonkers Fiscal Year 2021-2022 Adopted Budget. With the well-being of our residents and community at the forefront, we were able to not increase taxes as well as make a huge investment towards our education system. Budget Contains Zero Percent Property Tax Increase;

Maintains City Services and Positions & Provides Largest Contribution to Yonkers Public Schools.

 

YONKERS, NY – May 28, 2021 -- Following weeks of budget hearings, the City of Yonkers 2021-2022 Budget was adopted today with a 7-0 vote by the Yonkers City Council. The Adopted Budget contains no increase in property taxes and contains no reductions in City services or positions.

The 2022 Adopted Budget also increases the School District’s budget, totaling the city’s contribution to $280.5 million -- making it the largest local share of any big city to a district outside of New York City. Over 53% of the Adopted Budget is devoted to the Yonkers Public Schools, the highest percentage contribution made during the Spano Administration.

Mayor Spano stated, “Like many cities across the country, Yonkers experienced a yearlong lockdown due to a global pandemic that crippled local businesses and employment. Fortunately, Yonkers weathered the storm better than expected, allowing us to prevent an increase in the taxes so not to place additional burdens on our taxpayers. Today, the city is emerging from the lockdown and is getting back to business, putting our residents back to work.”

“By working together with our City Council, we are maintaining quality services for our residents, relieving our taxpayers as best as we can and making the vital investments in education so we can keep moving Yonkers forward,” Mayor Spano added. 

Budget Snapshot:

•        $1.25 billion total budget

SENATOR BIAGGI AND THE SENATE MAJORITY PASS LEGISLATION TO PROTECT ELDER NEW YORKERS.

ALBANY, NY – This week, Senator Alessandra Biaggi and the Senate Democratic Majority advanced legislation to support and protect the rights of elder New Yorkers. This package will prohibit termination of tenancy in certain senior housing facilities, establish the Office of Older Adult Workforce, encourage entrepreneurship for seniors, establish an elder abuse aftercare program, and protect consumers with the creation of the State Office of the Utility Consumer Advocate. These bills will also require elder abuse training for senior service providers, the public posting of a senior trail guide, expanding Medicare eligibility, and will raise the income eligibility limit for rent increase exemptions.

State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx/Westchester) issued the following statement:

“We always have an obligation to look after our elders, especially when they find themselves in vulnerable and traumatic situations. Elder abuse is tragically widespread, and it is imperative that our seniors have access to help and resources if they are ever facing abuse or neglect. Creating the nation’s first temporary elder abuse shelter here in the Bronx will allow New York State to lead and show how best to keep our elders safe, by setting an example for the entire country. ”

The legislation passed by Senator Biaggi and the Senate Majority includes:

• Elder Abuse Shelter Aftercare Demonstration Program: This bill, S.1065, sponsored by Senator Alessandra Biaggi, will establish an elder abuse shelter aftercare pilot program to evaluate the effectiveness and potential to expand temporary elder abuse shelters.

• Senior Housing Protections: This bill, S.1106, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, prohibits the termination of tenancy in housing facilities, with 20 or more units, occupied by senior citizens and/or persons with disabilities without cause or court approval.

• Office of Older Adult Workforce: This bill, S.555A, sponsored by Senator Rachel May, will establish an Office of Older Adult Workforce Development within the State Office for the Aging to provide support and services addressing the needs of older adults in the workplace.

• Encore Entrepreneurs: This bill, S.554, sponsored by Senator Rachel May, will direct the Office for the Aging and the Department of Economic Development to expand encore entrepreneurship in the state to empower individuals fifty years of age or older to become first time business owners.

• Office of the Utility Consumer Advocate: This bill, S.4884, sponsored by Senator Diane Savino, will establish an independent Office of the Utility Consumer Advocate to advocate for residential utility consumers at both state and federal proceedings. 

• Elder Abuse Prevention Training: This bill, S.5196B, sponsored by Senator James Sanders Jr. directs the State Office of the Aging to develop elder abuse prevention training that includes elder abuse detection, reporting, and counseling.  Senior service providers are required to take the training and receive supplemental refresher training every 3 years.

• Senior Trail Guide: This bill, S.6208, sponsored by Senator Jose M. Serrano mandates the public posting of a senior trail guide that identifies walking and hiking opportunities for active seniors within the state park system and along public non-motorized multi-use trails within the state.

• Expanding Medicare Eligibility: This bill, S.2535A, sponsored by Senator Gustavo Rivera will allow individuals who have comparable coverage to a Medicare Part D plan to also be eligible for EPIC if they otherwise qualify.

• Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption: This bill, S.4216, sponsored by Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, will  raise the income eligibility limits for the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) and the Disabled Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE) program to $55,000 beginning July 1, 2021. These programs exempt low income seniors and people with disabilities from rent increases that could lead to them losing their homes.
