FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11/19/2024

Yonkers Police charge local man with murder in stabbing death of brother-in-law.

Yonkers, NY – On Saturday, November 16th, 2024, at approximately 1:30 PM, members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to an apartment inside 760 Bronx River Road on a report of a stabbing at the location. Upon arrival, officers located a male with a stab wound to his chest at the entrance to an apartment inside the location. The male related that he had been stabbed in the chest and that he had stabbed his brother-in-law. Officers then entered the apartment and located a second male lying unresponsive in bed with a stab wound to the chest. Officers began rendering medical aid and rushed both men to a local area hospital.

Detectives from the Major Case Squad, in conjunction with the Digital Forensics and Crime Scene Units, responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the victim and suspect were alone in the apartment at the time of the incident, during which both sustained stab wounds to the chest. The suspect received treatment for his injury, while tragically, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Detectives are actively working to determine the circumstances that led to this fatal encounter, and further details may be released as the investigation progresses.

Commissioner Chris Sapienza stated, “This tragedy is a stark reminder that domestic violence can shatter lives at any time, even as we approach what should be a season of peace and togetherness. Our hearts go out to the victim's family and friends as they grieve this profound loss. We are committed to holding the perpetrator accountable and supporting those affected by this senseless act.”

John SINGH, a 53-year-old resident of Bronx River Road in this City, was arraigned on one count of Murder 2, a Class A-I Violent Felony in the New York State Penal Law. SINGH is expected to be remanded to the Westchester County Jail, pending release from the hospital. The case is being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

The victim is identified as Bernard Barua, a 78-year-old resident of this City. The City of Yonkers and Yonkers Police Department offer their sincere condolences to his family and friends.

NOTE: Booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
