HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY!

Dear Neighbor, Thousands of Italian Americans are woven into the fabric of our great City of Yonkers, bringing cherished traditions and making lasting contributions. Today, we recognize Columbus Day—a day when many of us reflect on the achievements of Italian Americans. Christopher Columbus was chosen as the individual who would symbolize the achievements of Italians in our great Country after 11 Italians were lynched by an organized group in New Orleans on March 14, 1891. This was the single largest lynching of any group in American History. From this tragedy, Columbus Day was created.   My grandparents, like so many other people who now call America home, immigrated from a small town in Italy called Morcone.  I had the privilege of watching them succeed, build a family, and make a home here in Yonkers. Today, our Italian American community members serve as educators, military personnel, first responders, health care workers, and more. Several, including our Mayor Mike Spano, play an essential role in the growth and future of our City. Please join me in honoring the history and countless contributions Italian Americans have made in Yonkers and beyond. Happy Columbus Day.
