Happy Independence Day! Although Westchester County was considered neutral ground during the Revolutionary War, we are fortunate to have a rich historical legacy from the era. This includes the sites of the battles of White Plains (1776), Edgar's Lane in Hastings-on-Hudson (1778), and Young's House in Thornwood (1780); the capture of Major John Andre at Tarrytown (1780); and the encampments of General Washington's and the Comte de Rochambeau's armies in Ardsley and Hartsdale, before their march to victory at Yorktown, Virginia (1781); as well as the historical sites of Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers and Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, I encourage you to become more familiar with Revolutionary Westchester 250 and the many historical societies, museums, and sites in our area that bring Westchester's role in the founding of our country to life.
This holiday, there will be local festivities and fireworks in Vahlhalla tonight, and in Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown, and Yonkers on July 4th. Just north of our district, at Van Cortlandt Manor, there also will be a living history presentation tomorrow morning on the First Rhode Island Regiment; made up of mostly Black soldiers, it was one of the few units to serve through the entire Revolutionary War. See the event listings below for these and other events taking place over the long weekend.
