On Memorial Day, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the men and women of our armed forces who sacrificed their lives in order to preserve our safety and freedom. Thank you, too, to all those who work each year to organize our commemorations, maintain military graves and memorial sites, and make sure that the names of our fallen heroes are never forgotten.
The season of Memorial Day observances begins for me each year with the 71st National Guard Regiment's ceremony at Mount Hope Cemetery, this year held on May 4. My association with the 71st began about 15 years ago, when I worked for Assemblyman Richard Brodsky and we put them on the path to listings on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Those listings helped the 71st secure funding to repair the block house monument you see here.
