Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of February, but here we are! First, let me say Happy Black History Month! This month, I encourage you to reflect on the black people in your line of work, in your community, or in your industry that has made a positive impact on society and share the news about them to someone else. Educating others is just one small way to honor and celebrate Black History.
Another way to celebrate Black History is by joining me for my annual Black History Month Spoken Word event on February 23rd. As a Councilmember I started hosting this event annually with the exception of last year because I love poetry, art and all things creative. It was always such a great event and I look forward to hosting it in my new position as Legislator. My co-hosts are Councilmember Deana Robinson and Yonkers Arts. The event is free and open to everyone to attend. More details are included below.
On another note, this week my colleagues and I stood with County Executive Latimer as he signed two acts into law. These two acts were the first pieces of legislation that we passed this year – land acquisition acts to authorize the purchase and conveyance of property to support the construction of two affordable housing projects. The Yonkers project will offer 94 affordable units and the Ossining project will offer 74 affordable units – all for senior citizens. We are working to address the growing housing crisis here in Westchester because we know that housing is a human right!
Sincerely,
Honorable Shanae V. Williams
Legislator, 16th District
