A new study suggests that habitual daytime napping might contribute to maintaining brain health as we age.
According to researchers from University College London and the University of the Republic of Uruguay, frequent napping was linked to a larger total brain volume, which is associated with a lower risk of dementia and other diseases.
However, the study acknowledged that its findings are based on self-reported napping habits and did not consider nap duration, which can affect whether sleep is beneficial or harmful.
The research employed a technique known as Mendelian randomization to analyze DNA samples and brain scans from 35,080 people.
The technique provides insights into the relationship between an exposure and outcome, but only indicates an association, not cause and effect.
While short daytime naps may benefit those needing them, previous studies have warned that frequent or extended napping can be a sign of early dementia or other health issues, such as high blood pressure and stroke.
Therefore, while napping may aid brain health, moderation and understanding individual sleep needs are crucial.
