As the highest elected Jordanian-American and the first Jordanian American elected to the New York State Legislature, It was my honor to introduce a resolution in the Assembly this week, in which the Assembly proudly memorialized Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 25, 2023, as Jordanian-American Heritage Day in the State of New York. The date marks the 77th Anniversary of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's Independence. Jordan is a Middle Eastern nation which is a major strategic and economic partner of the United States. As the first Jordanian-American elected to the New York State Assembly, I recognize the importance of representing the interests of Jordanian-Americans and Arab-Americans in the legislature. But even more so, I know that Yonkers, New York State and our nation are among the most diverse places in the world. We can celebrate every day, our diversity and the cultural contributions and traditions of those who recently came here, and those whose ancestors came here. Diversity is a strength.
