YONKERS HISTORY: Ella Fitzgerald lived in Yonkers with her mother and her mother's boyfriend, Joseph Da Silva, during the early 1920's?
It was at the Bethany African Methodist Episcopal Church in Yonkers where Fitzgerald first began singing publicly and taking piano lessons.
At 15, Fitzgerald relocated to Harlem after the unexpected death of her mother, but her singing roots were first watered in the artful place of Yonkers.
Fitzgerald is often referred to as the "Queen of Jazz"....
