Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District: Mark Your Calendars Arab American Heritage Month Event hosted by Assemblyman Nader Sayegh.

 

April is Arab American Heritage Month. According to the Arab American institute, Arab Americans are among the fastest growing demographics in our nation, with approximately four million Americans identifying as such. First observed around the United States in the 1990s, this month observes and recognized the contributions made by Arab Americans in American life and culture. In 2021 President Biden became the first sitting U.S. President to observe the holiday, and directed the Department of State to coordinate events and communications observing the Month.

In addition, Congress passed a joint resolution by Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Debbie Dingell expressing support for the holiday. In the resolution, Congress recognizes the City of Yonkers and the State of New York for being jurisdictions in the United States that have large Arab American populations and have taken a leadership role in celebrating the holiday.

Consistent with the spirit of our community, I'm pleased to announce that this week, the New York State Assembly again passed my annual resolution memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to recognize Arab American Heritage Month in the State of New York. To celebrate the passage of this resolution, my office will be hosting an event observing the recognition on Friday, April 28th, 2023. Join us from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at our District Office at 35 East Grassy Sprain Road in Suite 406B as we celebrate the contributions made by Arab Americans in our community and region. As the only Arab American lawmaker and the first Jordanian-American elected to the New York State Legislature, I welcome all constituents to join us at this event as we celebrate our community's diversity.
