Regarding Con Edison and High Home Bills
Over the past several months, I have spoken and met with numerous constituents and have seen the frequent online discussions regarding the increasing cost of energy, utilities, and delivery by Con Edison. I understand these costs can inflict a tremendous financial burden on our families. Despite the warm winter and the good faith steps people have taken to decrease their usage, bills have spiked sharply, leaving many of my constituents feeling that Con Edison is putting profit over people. I want to assure you that I hear you, I am fighting for you, and I will keep doing everything I can.
I am working on and will soon introduce legislation to limit the profits of all the utility companies, which would translate to lower bills for ratepayers across the district. I continue to oppose every planned rate increase and will propose additional legislation to limit these increases.
In February, I authored a letter to the New York Public Service Commission urging them to require ConEd to suspend the collection of late fees or payments this winter; and I continue to push the Public Service Commission to get this policy changed, which would make them consistent with other energy providers.
I understand these actions will not bring the immediate change many New York families need, but I believe this will help rein in utility costs in the long term. In the short term, I am partnering with Sustainable Westchester and
the Public Utility Law Project (PULP) on March 16 at 5 P.M. for a webinar that will provide information about the assistance that is available to help customers with their utility bills. I hope you can join me.
