Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

Dear Friends,

This month of February we recognize Black History Month, the annual celebration of the achievements and contributions of African Americans.

Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. This year's theme is "Black Resistance." It's also the central theme of our annual MLK Poem and Video contest. Submissions are due February 14, scroll down to see more details.

The City of Yonkers is proud of its diversity and I invite you to explore Black History here. Visit our public libraries to learn more or wander through some of the public art displays honoring icons like Ella Fitzgerald. The First Lady of Jazz is located adjacent to the Metro North Railroad station on 5 Buena Vista Avenue.

This past summer, sculptor Vinnie Bagwell joined us for the unveiling of her interpretive work on the legacy of five enslaved Africans. You can listen to her remarks here and visit the garden along the waterfront on 20 Water Grant Street all year round.

Have a great weekend!

MIKE SPANO
Mayor
