With a New York State Budget due by April 1st, I am heavily engaged in budget discussions with my Assembly and Senate Colleagues as we consider support for spending proposals that will help with the challenges our community and State faces.
Support for Affordable Housing is one of the major items being debated. Governor Kathy Hochul believes housing expenses would moderate if New York greatly increases the supply of available housing over the next decade. Supply and demand economics makes sense long term, but as Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano responded to my question at this week's budget hearing, the cost of living here is higher than most other cities outside of New York City and there is a need for funding to support affordable housing now. As I continue to encourage affordable housing; I will continue to protect our single family zoned neighborhoods.
The budget also includes spending items to support specific needs in our community. For example, I have submitted a funding request for an increase in State Funding for the Yonkers City School District to avoid an impending funding cliff that will result in 239 essential staff positions at risk of elimination.
I am also asking Assembly Speaker Heastie and my legislative colleagues to favorably consider a funding request for $5 Million for the repaving of State Roads, NY Route100 and Route 9A in the City of Yonkers wherever significant damage exists. |
