On our New York State Capitol's historic Million Dollar Staircase, I joined with Yonkers Council of PTAs/PTSAs, Yonkers Public Schools students, parents, and our elected officials including our new Assemblywoman Mary Jane Shimsky who represents parts of Northwest Yonkers, and Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin M. Quezada to rally for Fair State School Aid Funding for Yonkers Schools.
Last week, the State budget when calculating educational funding once again makes use of antiquated data (the 2000 Census) to determine how our schools are funded. This inequitable methodology once again shortchanges students in Yonkers; New York State's third-largest city. While the State is fully funding Foundation Aid, it's never been more imperative and urgent for our State to revisit exactly how our school funding is allocated. I've introduced several legislative proposals to address this effort, and encourage my colleagues to consider supporting them to correct this historic wrong.
My colleagues and members of the Yonkers City Council were at the Capitol this week to advocate for the financial support our students deserve. I thank them for their attentiveness and continued advocacy on behalf of our children. |
