Proposed Constitutional Amendment Now Goes to the Voters in 2024. Yonkers, NY - New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh (D-Yonkers) voted to pass the Equality Amendment to the State Constitution sending the proposal to the voters in 2024. The Amendment seeks to expand the prohibitions against discrimination in civil rights to include additional protected classes including reproductive health care. “Here in New York, we pride ourselves in championing policies that ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” said Assemblyman Nader Sayegh. “Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, enshrining reproductive rights in our State Constitution is paramount.” The Equality Amendment will protect New Yorkers from discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex including sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as well as pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes and reproductive health care decisions. The Equality Amendment builds on the Assembly’s record of protecting the fundamental rights of New Yorkers in laws it has passed. But unlike a Constitutional Amendment, laws can be quickly changed or challenged in the Courts. After passage in both houses of the State Legislature for a second consecutive year, the Equality Amendment will go before voters as a ballot referendum in November, 2024.
