Yonkers Insider: Mike Breen Republican for New York State Assembly 90th District: ENERGY.

As reported by LoHud, home heating bills are expected to rise this winter. Con Edison predicts a 32% increase in energy costs in the Lower Hudson Valley. Electric costs are expected to rise as well, with an expected increase of 27% Westchester County residents since last winter.

Experts point to last year’s shutdown of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant as a large contributor to the increase in energy costs due to the fact that it led to a near-total dependence on fossil fuels to produce electricity.

It is clear to me that New York is not ready for a rapid energy transition and residents will be left footing the bill. We need common sense energy legislation that considers the need for fossil fuel’s impact on climate change while keeping energy costs at affordable rates for all New Yorkers.

As an Assemblyman, I will support the creation of multiple nuclear power plants in upstate New York that would be located far from metropolitan areas to avoid security risks. I would also vote against the Electric House Requirements that are proposed in the New York State Legislature that will would ban gas hookups (natural gas, propane, or oil heaters) in new homes and commercial buildings in New York starting in 2024 - another cost that the Democrat led legislature is forcing upon our already struggling tax base.

New York is looking at an extremely expensive winter and aims to double down on expensive climate goals and legislation. Residents need financial relief more than anything. Let’s act with common sense.
